Background: Adaptive thermogenesis (AT) is the fat-free mass (FFM)-independent reduction of resting energy expenditure (REE) to caloric restriction (CR). AT attenuates weight loss and favors weight regain. Its variance, dynamics, and control remain obscure.

Objective: We investigated the impact of detailed body composition on aerobic fitness to determine whether regional components of fat mass have independent effects on VO2submax , and whether VO2submax and detailed body composition independently explain variation in REE.

Methods: 71 healthy adults (80% female, 20% male, BMI 28.2-43.

Our aim was to assess the psychosocial well-being of asthmatic children and adolescents, the influencing factors, and to determine the effect of inpatient rehabilitation on their quality of life; 226 asthmatic children and adolescents participated in the inpatient rehabilitation (IG). The comparison group (CG) included 92 asthmatic children and adolescents receiving standard medical treatments. Patients were aged between 8 and 16 years and were predominantly male.

In a multi-centre trial the effect of indoor rehabilitation in case of bronchial asthma in childhood and adolescence was evaluated on a prospective basis in comparison to an ambulant group of patients. 195 children and adolescents aged between 8 and 16 suffering from bronchial asthma (grading of severity 3 and 4) were included in the trial. The rehabilitation group (RG) included 149 patients, whereas the out-patient reference group consisted of 46 patients.

In this review we summarize the available literature on the pharmacokinetics of antibacterials in cystic fibrosis. A special impact is given on the results of our group which will be put in perspective with the results of other authors. The homogeneity of our patient population allows a valid comparison between patient and volunteer data.

41 children with pneumonia (proven by X-ray) and 271 children with upper respiratory tract infections were examined for bacterial antigens (Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococci) in serum and urine. In patients with pneumonia blood cultures, deep nasal swabs and antibody assay in serum (against Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia) were made. In 271 patients with an upper respiratory tract infection also a deep nasal swab for bacterial cultures was performed.

The bacterial count of air in 2 intensive care units was examined by membrane filter technique (MD 2 model SM 167 21). 88 samples of room air and 296 samples of incubator air were studied. The occurrence of bacteria, especially gramnegative rods, was investigated in incubators and in respirators.

Eight fluid blood culture media from different manufacturers were compared with regard to their ability to culture fastidious microorganisms. In turbidity measurements following inoculation with different bacteria, the media differed with respect to the duration of the lag phase and the log phase of bacterial growth. Similar differences were observed with small inocula in original blood culture bottles (commercially available).

For blood cultures in septicemic patients it is advisable to use two broth culture bottles. One bottle should be incubated with air, the other without (for anaerobes). Supplemented Peptone Broth II (Becton-Dickinson) and BHI Roche were superior for culturing aerobic and anaerob bacteria in comparison to other blood culture media.

In pooled serum of 12 healthy adults and 12 neonates (blood taken from the umbilical cord) the free and protein-bound parts of Cephazolin, Cephradin and Clindamycin were tested by equilibrium dialysis in relation to the concentration of the antibiotic. In the serum of adults at a concentration of 36 mcg/ml the free part of Cephazolin amounted to 16%, at a concentration of 35 mcg/ml the free Cephradin was 87%, at a concentration of 97 mcg/ml the free Clindamycin was 16%. The binding constant k of Cephazolin was 12.
