This study investigated the induction of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in the hTERT-immortalized normal human diploid epithelial cells (RPE1-hTERT) continuously exposed to 6000 Bq/ml of tritiated water (HTO) and organically bound tritium (OBT). The relationship of the DSBs induction with the intracellular amount as well as the localization of tritium was also examined. Tritium-labeled thymidine (3H-Thy) and palmitic acid (3H-PA) were used as OBT.

Establishment of acquired radioresistant cells to fractionated radiation from hTERT-immortalized normal human epithelial cell.

Senescence-like growth arrest (SLGA), which is a radiation-induced cell death pathway, is induced in immortalized normal human epithelial cell (hTERT-RPE1) by the daily fractionated X-irradiation with 1.5 Gy within 30 times. We here demonstrate that pre-treatment induces acquired radioresistance (ARR) that can survive from the lethal fractionated radiation.

Effectiveness of a Lifestyle Improvement Support App in Combination with a Wearable Device in Japanese People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: STEP-DM Study.

Introduction: Although the use of application (app)s and wearable devices supporting diabetes treatment has spread rapidly in recent years, evidence of their impact, especially in combination of them, is limited. TOMOCO™ is a lifestyle improvement support app that features interactive virtual conversations according to the programmed algorithm guiding users toward their goals of lifestyle improvement. We hypothesized that TOMOCO™ in combination with Fitbit, which accurately tracks users' activity level, would encourage people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to change their lifestyles and improve their glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels without changes in conventional therapy.

Estimation of external dose for wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture: decomposition of electron spin resonance spectrum.

The signal intensities of CO2- radicals in teeth can be utilised as an individual indicator of the cumulative external dose for animals. To accurately determine the external dose, it is desirable to analyse the CO2- radical intensity and improve its detection limit. We recently reported a dose-response in the range of 0-200 mGy and estimated the absorbed dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in/around the related areas to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

Preference for vegetables is influenced by various factors, including demographic, psychological, socio-environmental, and genetic factors. This study confirmed that age, pickiness, and perceptual attributes were predictors of preference for vegetables and examined how preference for vegetables and their perceptual attributes varies with age and pickiness. Children (8-14 years, n = 420), youth (15-34 years, n = 569), middle-aged adults (35-64 years, n = 726), and older adults (65-85 years, n = 270) were asked which vegetables they liked (or disliked) and which perceptual attributes of each vegetable they liked (or disliked).

Developing a Novel Method for the Analysis of Spinal Cord-Penile Neurotransmission Mechanisms.

Sexual dysfunction can be caused by impaired neurotransmission from the peripheral to the central nervous system. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the input of sensory information from the peripheral genital area and investigate the control mechanisms in the spinal cord to clarify the pathological basis of sensory abnormalities in the genital area. However, an in vivo evaluation system for the spinal cord-penile neurotransmission mechanism has not yet been developed.

Assessing the pyrogenicity of whole influenza virus particle vaccine in cynomolgus macaques.

Among inactivated influenza vaccines, the whole virus particle vaccine (WPV) elicits superior priming responses to split virus vaccine (SV) in efficiently inducing humoral and cellular immunity. However, there is concern for undesired adverse events such as fever for WPV due to its potent immunogenicity. Therefore, this study investigated the febrile response induced by subcutaneous injection with quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines of good manufacturing grade for pharmaceutical or investigational products in cynomolgus macaques.

Radiation dose and gene expression analysis of wild boar 10 years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant accident.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident led to contamination with radioactive cesium in an extensive environment in Japan in 2011. We evaluated the concentration of radioactive cesium in the skeletal muscles of 22 wild boars and the expression of IFN-γ, TLR3, and CyclinG1 in the small intestine and compared them with those of wild boar samples collected from Hyogo prefecture. The average Cs radioactivity concentration in wild boars in the ex-evacuation zone was 470 Bq/kg.

Detection limit of electron spin resonance for Japanese deciduous tooth enamel and density separation method for enamel-dentine separation.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry is one of the most powerful tools for radiation dose reconstruction. The detection limit of this technique using human teeth is reported to be 56 mGy or 67 mGy; however, the absorbed dose of Fukushima residents after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident was estimated to be lower than this detection limit. Our aim is to assess the absorbed radiation dose of children in Fukushima Prefecture after the accident; therefore, it is important to estimate the detection limit for their teeth.

Roles of resonant muonic molecule in new kinetics model and muon catalyzed fusion in compressed gas.

Muon catalyzed fusion ([Formula: see text]CF) in which an elementary particle, muon, facilitates the nuclear fusion between the hydrogen isotopes has been investigated in a long history. In contrast to the rich theoretical and experimental information on the [Formula: see text]CF in cold targets, there is relatively scarce information on the high temperature gas targets of deuterium-tritium mixture with high-thermal efficiency. We demonstrate new kinetics model of [Formula: see text]CF including three roles of resonant muonic molecules, (i) changing isotopic population, (ii) producing epi-thermal muonic atoms, and (iii) inducing fusion in-flight.

Food can be a valuable mediator of nostalgia. Japanese food culture places a great emphasis on seasons, and thus there may be a relationship between nostalgic foods and seasonality. In this study, we hypothesized that participants who emphasized seasonality at the time of vegetable purchase (seasonality-oriented; hereafter, SO) would be more likely to feel vegetable-evoked nostalgia than those who did not (non-seasonality-oriented; hereafter, non-SO).

Exploring the growth process of successors in long-lived small and medium-sized manufacturing companies: a qualitative study.

Japan is the world's largest country in terms of the number of long-lived companies, the majority of which are family-owned small and medium-sized enterprises. On the other hand, many business owners will be retiring without successors, and the closure of these small and medium enterprises may have a significant impact on the future economy. The purpose of this study is to explore the growth process of successors in long-lived small and medium-sized manufacturing companies so that potential successors can know what they will experience as managers and be prepared for the future, and professionals who support successors can be provided with information on the growth process of successors to provide appropriate support.

Deexcitation Dynamics of Muonic Atoms Revealed by High-Precision Spectroscopy of Electronic K X Rays.

We observed electronic K x rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using superconducting transition-edge sensor microcalorimeters. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic Kα and Kβ x rays together with the hypersatellite K^{h}α x rays around 6 keV.

Inhibition of BACE1 and Amyloid-β Aggregation by Meroterpenoids from the Mushroom .

To develop drugs to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD) on the basis of the amyloid cascade hypothesis, the amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation inhibitory activities of 110 extracts from mushrooms were evaluated by thioflavin T (Th-T) assays. The MeOH extract of inhibited Aβ aggregation, and the bioactivity-guided fractionation of the extract afforded four novel meroterpenoids, named scutigeric acid (), albatrelactone methyl ester (), albatrelactone (), and 10',11'-dihydroxygrifolic acid (), together with two known compounds, grifolin () and grifolic acid (). The structures of - were elucidated using NMR, MS, UV, IR, and induced ECD spectral data.

Current detergent or ether-disrupted split vaccines (SVs) for influenza do not always induce adequate immune responses, especially in young children. This contrasts with the whole virus particle vaccines (WPVs) originally used against influenza that were immunogenic in both adults and children but were replaced by SV in the 1970s due to concerns with reactogenicity. In this study, we re-evaluated the immunogenicity of WPV and SV, prepared from the same batch of purified influenza virus, in cynomolgus macaques and confirmed that WPV is superior to SV in priming potency.

Radioactivity and radionuclides in deciduous teeth formed before the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

The Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident in March of 2011 released substantial amounts of radionuclides into the environment. We collected 4,957 deciduous teeth formed in children before the Fukushima accident to obtain precise control data for teeth formed after the accident. Radioactivity was measured using imaging plates (IP) and epidemiologically assessed using multivariate regression analysis.

Transition of Radioactive Cesium Deposition in Reproductive Organs of Free-Roaming Cats in Namie Town, Fukushima.

We investigated the internal contamination by radioactive cesium associated with the FDNPP accident, in the testes or uterus and ovaries of free-roaming cats (), which were protected by volunteers in the Namie Town, Fukushima. A total of 253 samples (145 testes and 108 uterus and ovaries) obtained from adult cats and 15 fetuses from 3 pregnant female cats were measured. Free-roaming cats in Namie Town had a higher level of radioactive contamination in comparison to the control group in Tokyo, as the Cs + Cs activity concentration ranged from not detectable to 37,882 Bq kg in adult cats.

Morphological reproductive characteristics of testes and fertilization capacity of cryopreserved sperm after the Fukushima accident in raccoon (Procyon lotor).

Since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, we have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of racoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident.
