Catalytic propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has mainly been studied using metal- and metal oxide-based catalysts. Studies on dehydrogenation catalysis by metal hydrides, however, have rarely been reported. In this study, PDH reactions using group IIIB and IVB metal hydride catalysts were investigated under relatively low-temperature conditions of 450 °C.

Aim: Fracture-related femoral neck displacement is more likely in patients with schizophrenia because of delayed diagnosis, as these patients frequently have less severe fracture-associated subjective symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the association of schizophrenia with the risk of fracture-related femoral neck displacement in hospitalized patients.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with femoral neck fractures treated between April 2013 and March 2018 at a single institution.

  • Autoimmune factor V deficiency (AiFVD) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by inhibitors that target factor V, affecting blood clotting ability.
  • In this case, an 89-year-old man experienced excessive bleeding during a surgical procedure for hemodialysis, which was linked to prolonged clotting times and the presence of factor V inhibitors and autoantibodies.
  • Treatment with oral prednisolone led to improvement in his bleeding symptoms and normalization of his coagulation tests after 34 days, highlighting the importance of diagnosing AiFVD in similar patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compares anemia cases in infants with gastroschisis and omphalocele, analyzing data from 60 patients across five pediatric surgery departments in southern Japan from 2011 to 2020.
  • - Results indicated that infants with gastroschisis received more iron treatment during hospitalization but had lower hemoglobin levels at their first outpatient visit compared to those with omphalocele, highlighting significant risk factors for anemia related to gastroschisis and gestational age at birth.
  • - The findings suggest that infants with gastroschisis are at a higher risk of anemia, potentially due to their unique exposure to amniotic fluid and the impact it has on their intestinal health in utero.

Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus type 1 (EEHV1) is the most important causative agent of an acute fatal hemorrhagic disease in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). We employed loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to develop a rapid and simple detection method for EEHV1 in blood. When used to test 21 clinical samples collected in Japan, the EEHV1 assay correctly identified one positive and 20 negative clinical samples.

Objective: Morphological analysis suggests that afferent arteriole hyalinosis reflects disturbed autoregulation of glomerular hemodynamics. However, the effect of arteriolar hyalinosis on the correlation between blood pressure (BP) levels and proteinuria is unknown in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to determine this correlation.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), characterized by senile inflammation, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Conduit artery function and small artery structure relate to cardiovascular disease. We examined the correlations, determinants and interrelationships of arterial indices in association with CKD in a cross-sectional study of 139 patients (60% male; mean age 44 years) with CKD (stages 3-5, 39%) who underwent a renal biopsy.

Objectives: Increased incidence of preterm birth, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) babies have been reported in women with endometriosis, but the study populations included women in whom a definitive diagnosis was not attainable, and women who conceived via in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET), which, in itself, is a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcome. Thus there is a lack of consensus on the effects of endometriosis on pregnancy outcome. This study compared the pregnancy outcomes of women with or without a definitive diagnosis of endometriosis on laparoscopy.

Background: Hypertriglyceridemia (hTG) is a risk factor for progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, it remains unknown whether the adipocytokine complement component 3 (C3) is involved in the association between hTG and CKD.

Methods: The study included 138 patients (54 % male) with non-nephrotic (serum albumin ≥3 g/dl) CKD who had undergone a renal biopsy and did not have hypocomplementemic disease. Renal arteriolopathy was assessed semi-quantitatively.

Life-threatening complications can occur unexpectedly during general anesthesia in operations for superior vena caval (SVC) syndrome due to intrathoracic tumors. To prevent such sequelae, we have placed a temporary extracorporeal axillofemoral venous bypass graft with satisfactory results. In six patients (malignant mediastinal tumor, four; lung cancer, two), under local anesthesia before induction of general one, the cannulas, each appropriately sized in accordance with the diameter of the axillary and femoral veins, were directly introduced into the corresponding veins after systemic heparinization.
