Purpose: Abdominal obesity plays a significant role in the development of metabolic syndrome, with individual metabolic risk profiles for visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues. This study aimed to calculate and correlate the subcutaneous, visceral, and total fat compartment volume in metabolic and non-metabolic syndrome patients.

Material And Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 112 patients categorized into Group A (with metabolic syndrome) and Group B (without metabolic syndrome).

Background: The grading of the severity of head trauma plays a vital role in acute patient management and planning a case-appropriate follow-up protocol. Few studies have been published regarding the Rotterdam scoring. In this study, we have established a correlation between the Rotterdam scores, need for sequential CTs, and the cumulative radiation dose.

Background/objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of pancreatin (pancrelipase) enteric-coated minimicrospheres (MMS) over a one-year period in patients with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) due to chronic pancreatitis (CP).

Methods: This was a 51-week, open-label extension (OLE) of a one-week, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in India that enrolled patients ≥18 years of age with confirmed PEI due to CP. Patients received pancreatin (Creon(®) 40000 MMS™) at a dose of 80,000 Ph.

Background: Obesity is associated with several comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obstructive sleep apnea. It is also well established that obese patients have an increased risk of several types of cancer like kidney, pancreas, endometrial, breast, and others. The bariatric surgeon needs to be aware of the problem of benign tumors and cancer in obese patients as well as the optimal management of these conditions that may be present at the time of evaluation for bariatric surgery, during the surgical procedure, and in the postoperative period.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) causes digestive issues like abdominal pain and weight loss, and the study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pancreatin (Creon 40000 MMS) for treating PEI linked to chronic pancreatitis (CP).
  • The study involved a week-long, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 62 patients, who were either given pancreatin or a placebo to assess changes in fat absorption.
  • Results showed that patients taking pancreatin had a significant improvement in fat absorption compared to placebo, along with better nitrogen absorption and reduced stool fat, with minimal adverse events reported.

Background: Serological tests may fail to identify hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection as a cause of liver cirrhosis in a proportion of patients. The frequency of such occult infection in regions with intermediate HBV endemicity is not known. Such cases may be diagnosed by incremental testing for IgG anti-HBc, serum HBV DNA, and HBV DNA in liver tissue.

Introduction: Gastric Helicobacter pylori infection is believed to be associated with a higher risk of hepatic encephalopathy among patients with cirrhosis of liver. However, the role of this infection in causation of subclinical hepatic encephalopathy has not been studied in detail.

Methods: Patients with cirrhosis of liver but no hepatic encephalopathy underwent venous blood ammonia measurement, psychometric tests (number connection tests [NCT] and figure connection tests [FCT]), and gastric biopsies for presence of H.

Data on duration of viral excretion and viraemia during hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection are limited. We tested serial stool and serum samples from 20 patients with acute hepatitis E for HEV RNA. Faecal excretion and viraemia in these patients were found to be short lived.

Although sclerosing cholangitis is well recognized to occur in patients with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis as a complication of ulcerative colitis is uncommon. We describe a patient who had idiopathic ulcerative colitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and calcific pancreatitis with endocrine pancreatic deficiency, a rare combination.

With a view to increase efficiency and reduce toxicity of Plumbagin, an attempt was made to formulate plumbagin as a controlled release preparation using various carriers and test for their antitumor and antifertility activities. Niosomes and albumin microspheres were used as carriers. In vitro data showed promising results for these formulations thus they were taken up for in vivo assessment.
