Objective: This study aimed to evaluate physician-patient alignment on menopausal symptom burden and impact for women experiencing natural vasomotor symptoms (nVMS) or VMS induced by endocrine therapy for breast cancer (iVMS).

Methods: For this real-world, cross-sectional survey, physicians from the USA and five European countries provided data for consulting patients experiencing nVMS/iVMS; patients optionally self-reported their experiences. Alignment between physician and patient responses was assessed using weighted Cohen's analysis.

Objectives: Despite the profound impact of menopausal symptoms on women, treatment utilization is low, and many seek alternative therapies. The REALISE study aimed to evaluate the treatment landscape - that is, pharmacological treatment, lifestyle changes (LC), and use of over-the-counter (OTC) products - for women from six high-income countries experiencing vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and receiving healthcare.

Study Design: Analysis of a secondary dataset, the Adelphi Real World Disease Specific Programme™, a large, cross-sectional, point-in-time survey conducted in the United States and five European countries (February-October 2020).

Sexuality and Infertility.

Obstet Gynecol Clin North Am

June 2024

Infertility diagnoses and treatment can lead to psychological distress and relationship strain. Infertility is commonly associated with disruptions in sexual function and satisfaction among women, in part due to overlapping etiologic factors (eg, comorbid medical conditions). Women and couples with infertility should be screened for sexual problems and provided education on the relationship between infertility and sexuality.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand how both physicians and patients perceive the impact of natural and induced vasomotor symptoms (nVMS and iVMS) on women's lives, particularly in relation to mood and sleep disturbances.
  • Conducted through surveys of physicians and patient questionnaires in the USA and Europe, the research collected data on symptom severity and its effects on quality of life and work productivity.
  • Findings revealed that a considerable number of patients with mild symptoms also faced significant mood and sleep issues, which worsened their overall quality of life and daily functioning beyond the vasomotor symptoms themselves.

Sexual dysfunction is a common consequence of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). In this book chapter, we discuss the pathophysiology, prevalence, evaluation, and evidence-based management of sexual dysfunction in patients affected by GSM. Additionally, we present an algorithm to guide clinicians in the management and treatment of sexual dysfunction in this setting based on available evidence and best practices.

Studies have shown racial/ethnic differences in the prevalence of vasomotor symptoms (VMS), sleep disturbance and VMS treatment in menopause. To assess the reproducibility of these differences, we systematically reviewed observational studies, published in 2000-2021, reporting the prevalence/incidence of VMS, sleep disturbance or treatment use in menopausal women stratified by race/ethnicity. We screened 3799 records from PubMed and Embase and included 27 papers (19 studies).

Women at high inherited risk of ovarian cancer are offered risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) from age 35 to 45 years. Although potentially life-saving, RRSO may induce symptoms that negatively affect quality of life and impair long-term health. Clinical care following RRSO is often suboptimal.

Background: One in 3 children has had at least 1 adverse childhood experience (ACE), and ACEs have been associated with multiple medical and psychiatric morbidities in women later in life, including greater menopause symptom burden.

Aim: To evaluate the association between ACEs and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in midlife women.

Methods: A cross-sectional analysis from DREAMS-the Data Registry on Experiences of Aging, Menopause, and Sexuality-was conducted with questionnaires completed by women aged 40 to 65 years who presented to a women's health clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from May 2015 to December 2016.

Numerous surveys have documented that sexuality and/or sexual activity is important to women at all stages of adulthood, including postmenopause. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) are common disorders in postmenopausal women and may co-occur. Both are often undiagnosed due to a lack of knowledge of the disorder, health-care professional discomfort in discussing sexual problems or a lack of routine screening.

Background: Approximately 26% of adult women in the United States suffer from female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD), yet little has been done to compare the experience of FSAD in pre- and postmenopausal women, which is critical to enhance the current understanding of FSAD and inform the development and assessment of treatment options for these patient populations.

Aim: To explore the experience of condition-associated symptoms and the relative importance of FSAD symptoms, including their severity, bother, and impact, on participants' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pre- and postmenopausal women with FSAD.

Methods: In-depth, qualitative, semistructured concept elicitation interviews were conducted with premenopausal (n = 23) and postmenopausal (n = 13) women who were clinically diagnosed with FSAD by a trained sexual medicine clinician.

Background: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a significant cause of distress for an estimated 12-24% of women, and over the past 5 decades several questionnaires have been developed for clinical practice.

Aim: The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate the ethnic representation of sample populations used in the studies to validate FSD questionnaires.

Methods: A scoping review was performed using electronic databases, including PubMed and Scopus, to identify FSD questionnaires validated between 1976 and 2021.

Approximately 10% to 12% of women meet the criteria for hypoactive sexual desire disorder, with the highest prevalence in midlife women, ranging from 14.5% to 33%. Despite the negative effect on health and quality of life, most women are reluctant to discuss sexual concerns with healthcare professionals.

Introduction: Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) / Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (FSIAD) impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of women and their partners, yet existing measures fail to adequately capture relevant concepts (ie, what is essential to measure including symptoms/impacts) important to women with HSDD/FSIAD.

Objectives: To identify HRQoL tools used to assess women with HSDD/FSIAD, and to evaluate their psychometric properties (ie, reliability, validity, and responsiveness).

Methods: We conducted searches in PubMed, Embase and PsychINFO from June 5, 1989 to September 30, 2020 for studies in women with HSDD/FSIAD and psychometric analyses (English only).
