Objectives: The utility of thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy in patients with mild stroke and large vessel occlusion (LVO) remains inconclusive. This retrospective study compared short-term and long-term outcomes in patients treated with best medical therapy (BMT group) versus with intravenous thrombolytics and/or endovascular thrombectomy (intervention group).

Methods: Patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), LVO, and National Institutes of Health Stroke Score (NIHSS) ≤5 were included.

A retrospective review of sex differences of white matter hyperintensities in brain MRI of patients with migraine.

Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in patients who experience migraine and compare findings between adult male and female patients. Specific symptoms and comorbidities also were analyzed to determine whether they were associated with WMH prevalence or the sex of patients with migraine. We hypothesized that females would have a higher prevalence of WMHs, experience more frequent and more severe migraine headaches, and be more likely to have certain comorbidities associated with migraine than males.

Validation of three health literacy screening questions compared with S-TOFHLA in a low-income diverse English- and Spanish-Speaking population.

Background: Clinicians need a tool to gauge patients' ability to understand health conditions and treatment options. The Short-form Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (S-TOFHLA) is the gold standard for this, but its length is prohibitive for use in clinical settings. This study seeks to validate a novel three-item question set for predicting health literacy.

Background: Repurposing dantrolene to treat Alzheimer's disease has been shown to be effective in amyloid transgenic mouse models but has not been examined in a model of tauopathy.

Objective: The effects of a nanoparticle intranasal formulation, the Eagle Research Formulation of Ryanodex (ERFR), in young adult and aged wild type and PS19 tau transgenic mice was investigated.

Methods: The bioavailability of intranasal ERFR was measured in 2 and 9-11-month-old C57BL/6J mice.

Longitudinal Assessment of Empathy and Burnout Across a Single Pharmacy Class Cohort.

Objective: This is a final analysis of longitudinal evaluation of burnout and empathy among a cohort of Doctor of Pharmacy students throughout their 4-year enrollment.

Methods: The class of 2021 received sequential Qualtrics (Qualtrics, Provo, UT) surveys containing 2 validated survey instruments, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Surveys were disseminated at the start of the program (PY1) and the end of each academic year (PY1, PY2, PY3, PY4).

Exploring Associations Between Abnormal Weight Classifications and Child Maltreatment Diagnoses.

Child maltreatment poses not only immediate danger, but as a type of toxic stress, it creates higher risk of biologic dysfunction later in life. Pediatricians are in a unique position to diagnose child maltreatment, but they need evidence-based guidance for when to initiate screening when injury is occult. In this retrospective cohort study of 855 pediatric patients diagnosed with child maltreatment, researchers explored whether type or number of diagnoses was associated with abnormal pediatric weight in either direction.

Patient Outcomes in Traumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Retrospective Analysis.

Introduction: Patients with isolated traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (itSAH) are often transferred to a Level I or II trauma center for neurosurgical evaluation. Recent literature suggests that some patients, such as those with high Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores, may be safely observed without neurosurgical consultation. The objective of this study was to investigate characteristics of patients with itSAH to determine the clinical utility of neurosurgical evaluation and repeat imaging.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-related changes may have led to changes in immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) rates. We aimed to evaluate these changes before, during, and after the initial wave of COVID-19.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed women who underwent mastectomy with or without IBR from January 1 to September 30, 2019 and from January 1 to September 30, 2020, and compared demographic, clinical, and surgical variables between defined time periods.

Methods: We identified patients who underwent an abdominal lipectomy at our institution from January 2015 to July 2020. Those with concurrent hernia repair were excluded.

Error Patterns in the Knowledge-Based Inference-Making of Less Skilled Middle-Grade Readers: An Exploratory Study.

The primary aims of this mixed method study were to (a) examine the effectiveness of a brief inference intervention, (b) compare the types of knowledge-based inferencing errors less skilled middle grade readers make, and (c) evaluate if self-reported cognitive load relates to inferencing. Participants ( = 17) were randomly assigned to a graphic organizer-inference intervention (GO-Inference) ( = 9) or business as usual (BAU) condition ( = 8), and differences between groups were explored for each study purpose. Quantitative and qualitative results suggested that while less skilled readers in the GO-Inference condition made modest progress in forming knowledge-based inferences, they continued to struggle to distinguish relevant versus irrelevant information from text and/or retrieve knowledge necessary to form inferences.

The Utility of Cannabis-Based Medicine in Chronic Pain Management: A Case Report.

Chronic pain is a common diagnosis that patients may face, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality and affecting the overall quality of life. In addition to established multidisciplinary pain management, medical cannabis may offer an approach to improving pain outcomes and functionality. This case involves a 72-year-old female patient, with chronic neck, lower back, and diffuse arthritic pain due to comorbid osteoarthritis (OA), scleroderma, and scoliosis.

Risk Factors Associated With Neurosurgical Intervention in Patients With Mild Traumatic Intracranial Hemorrhage.

Introduction: Community centers commonly transfer patients with traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) to level 1 and 2 trauma centers for neurosurgical evaluation regardless of the degree of injury. Determining risk factors leading to neurosurgical intervention (NSI) may reduce morbidity and mortality of traumatic ICH and the transfer of patients with lower risk of NSI.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients admitted or transferred to a level 1 trauma center from October 2015 to September 2019 with Glassgow Coma Scale score 13-15 and traumatic ICH on initial head computerized tomography (CTH) scan.

The role of carotid ultrasound in patients with non-lateralizing neurological complaints.

Objectives: In the United States, approximately 18-25% of carotid duplex ultrasound (CUS) studies are ordered to assess patients with non-lateralizing neurological complaints such as syncope, blurry vision, lightheadedness, headache, and altered mental status. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the benefit of CUS in the evaluation of patients presenting with non-lateralizing signs or symptoms.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis to assess the degree and laterality of carotid stenosis among patients with non-lateralizing neurological complaints who underwent CUS interpreted by certified vascular neurologists over a period of 3 years.

From space to biomedicine: Enabling biomarker data science in the cloud.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is advancing research capabilities for data science with two of the National Cancer Institute's major research programs, the Early Detection Research Network (EDRN) and the Molecular and Cellular Characterization of Screen-Detected Lesions (MCL), by enabling data-driven discovery for cancer biomarker research. The research team pioneered a national data science ecosystem for cancer biomarker research to capture, process, manage, share, and analyze data across multiple research centers. By collaborating on software and data-driven methods developed for space and earth science research, the biomarker research community is heavily leveraging similar capabilities to support the data and computational demands to analyze research data.

Subjective beliefs and economic preferences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unlabelled: The COVID-19 pandemic presents a remarkable opportunity to put to work all of the research that has been undertaken in past decades on the elicitation and structural estimation of subjective belief distributions as well as preferences over atemporal risk, patience, and intertemporal risk. As contributors to elements of that research in laboratories and the field, we drew together those methods and applied them to an online, incentivized experiment in the United States. We have two major findings.

Diet-Microbiota-Brain Axis in Alzheimer's Disease.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, particularly in older adults, with clinical manifestations of progressive cognitive decline and functional impairment. The prevalence of AD and related dementia is mounting worldwide, but its etiology remains unresolved, with no available preventative or ameliorative therapy. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota of patients with AD is different from cognitively normal counterparts.

Eliciting Beliefs about COVID-19 Prevalence and Mortality: Epidemiological Models Compared with The Street.

Subjective belief elicitation about uncertain events has a long lineage in the economics and statistics literatures. Recent developments in the experimental elicitation and statistical estimation of subjective belief distributions allow inferences about whether these beliefs are biased relative to expert opinion, and the confidence with which they are held. Beliefs about COVID-19 prevalence and mortality interact with risk management efforts, so it is important to understand relationships between these beliefs and publicly disseminated statistics, particularly those based on evolving epidemiological models.

Benefits and limitations of telegenetics: A literature review.

Telegenetics involves the use of technology (generally video conferencing) to remotely provide genetic services. A telegenetics platform is critical for those with limitations or vulnerabilities compromising their ability to attend clinic in-person, including individuals in rural areas. As the demand for remote genetics services increases, and amidst the COVID-19 pandemic with social distancing practices in place, we conducted a literature review to examine the benefits and limitations of telegenetics and explore the views of patients and health professionals utilizing telegenetics.
