Article Synopsis
  • - The Institute for Radiological Science, QST, and IES have conducted significant animal experiments to analyze radiation risks related to life expectancy and cancer rates.
  • - Due to economic, practical, and ethical challenges, there's a need to store data and biological samples from these experiments for future research and sharing.
  • - QST/NIRS has created J-SHARE, an archive to store and promote collaboration on radiation biology research, and aims to integrate data and tissue specimens from IES to enhance knowledge on radiation risk assessment and protection.

Article Synopsis
  • A 70-something woman was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had surgery followed by chemotherapy, but five years later, she developed a lung nodule that was confirmed to be a metastasis from her pancreatic cancer.
  • After a second lung surgery for another nodule that appeared over a year later, which was also identified as a metastasis, she chose not to receive further chemotherapy.
  • Remarkably, seven years and seven months after her initial pancreatic surgery, she has survived without any major recurrence of her cancer.

Dasatinib, a second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), inhibits multiple kinase pathways and is a promising anti-tumor agent for various solid tumors, including lung cancer. Herein, we report a patient with coexisting epidermal growth factor receptor ()-mutant lung adenocarcinoma and -positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The patient received afatinib for a postoperative intrapulmonary recurrence of lung adenocarcinoma harboring exon 19 deletion.

A 69-year-old man visited our hospital due to an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray. Chest CT showed a mass shadow in his left lower lobe accompanied by an infiltrative shadow in the right upper lobe. Thorough examination led to a diagnosis of pulmonary squamous cell lung carcinoma, stage IIIB (T3N2M0).

Cellular cannibalism is a tumor activity where a cell is engulfed by another cell. This process promotes tumor cell survival under unfavorable conditions. The current report describes an extremely rare case of thrombocytopenia resulting from cellular cannibalism in a patient with bone marrow metastasis due to malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).

A 72-year-old man with a 10-year history of coronary heart disease started evolocumab treatment once a month after developing excess myalgia due to therapy with a 3-hydroxy-methylglutaryl CoA reductase inhibitor. No side effects such as myalgia symptoms had been reported during the first 14 months of evolocumab treatment; however, he suddenly presented with acute severe thrombocytopenia following the 14th treatment. His platelet count continued to decrease to a nadir of 1,000/L.

Article Synopsis
  • Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare type of cancer without standard treatments, prompting this study to explore the effectiveness of an experimental therapy combining R-CHOP and high-dose methotrexate with intrathecal chemotherapy.
  • The PRIMEUR-IVL trial was conducted across 22 hospitals in Japan, involving 38 patients aged 20-79 years with untreated IVLBCL, focusing on their safety and potential response to the new treatment protocol over a planned follow-up.
  • Initial findings show that 37 patients were eligible for the study, with a median follow-up period of around 3.9 years, indicating that the trial is still ongoing to evaluate long-term outcomes and effectiveness.

A 73-year-old man visited his family doctor with complaints of cough and breathlessness. Right pleural effusion was detected by chest X-ray. Computed tomography(CT) showed a huge mass 13×11 cm in the right mediastinum along with right pleural effusion and atelectasis of the right middle and lower lobes.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic disease characterized by hypophosphatemia and skeletal undermineralization. Overproduction of fibroblast growth factor 23( FGF23) from the responsible tumor is reported to be a causative factor. Removing the tumor is the only effective treatment for TIO, but identifying the tumor is sometimes difficult.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant health burden that increases the risk of adverse events. Currently, there is no validated models to predict risk of mortality among CKD patients experienced adverse drug reactions (ADRs) during hospitalization. This study aimed to develop a mortality risk prediction model among hospitalized CKD patients whom experienced ADRs.

High-speed recognition of the shape of a target object is indispensable for robots to perform various kinds of dexterous tasks in real time. In this paper, we propose a high-speed 3-D sensing system with active target-tracking. The system consists of a high-speed camera head and a high-speed projector, which are mounted on a two-axis active vision system.

Background: The use of chemotherapeutic agents for treatment of cancer has expanded widely with multiple potent agents being administered at higher but more tolerable doses. The majority of these patients receive several cycles of chemotherapy over a period of months, resulting in a toxic physiologic environment that causes adverse effects. These adverse effects can lead to a significant impact on the patients' quality of life.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) with H(2) receptor antagonist (H(2)RA) in treatment of upper abdominal symptoms.

Methods: This was a multi-center, open study conducted at 102 hospitals in Japan. Patients with reflux esophagitis received famotidine 10 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, then omeprazole 10 mg once daily for 2 weeks.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the relationship between the degree of infarction of uterine fibroids on enhanced MRI after embolization and long-term clinical outcomes.

Methods: During 92 months, 290 consecutive patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids were treated with embolization; 221 who underwent enhanced MRI before embolization and 1 week after embolization were included in this study. The infarction rates of all fibroid tissue were assessed using enhanced MRI after embolization.

Purpose: The passive reflux into ovarian veins (OVs) is well known as a common finding in normal asymptomatic women. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hemodynamics of OVs in women with myomatous uterus.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-two women with symptomatic uterine leiomyomata underwent time-of-flight MR (TOF-MR) angiography, including venography and arteriography, and contrast-enhanced MRI.

Purpose: To assess uterine artery recanalization, together with tumor devascularization, after embolization using gelatin sponge particles alone for fibroids.

Methods: Twenty-seven patients underwent uterine artery embolization (UAE) for fibroids using only gelatin sponge particles. The angiographic endpoint of embolization was defined as near stasis of contrast medium in the ascending segment of the uterine artery.

A 2-month-old boy with a characteristic elfin face was diagnosed as having Williams syndrome by means of specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis for a chromosomal microdeletion located in 7q11.23. He was suspected to have immunodeficiency because of a persistent enlargement of axillary lymphnodes after immunization with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine since 7 month-old of age.
