Background: Tea is the second most consumed beverage worldwide and its health benefits have been extensively studied because of its rich flavanol content. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a novel continuous step-wise temperature extraction process in maximising antioxidant activity, total phenolic content and flavanol concentration of different tea beverages.
Results: Continuous step-wise temperature extraction produced the highest absolute antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content and concentration of major tea flavanols in Yuhua tea compared to the other tea types at all extraction points.
Oxidative stress induces autooxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, producing numerous isoprostanoids and isofuranoids. These oxidized products are measurable in human plasma and urine and serve as oxidative stress biomarkers for chronic diseases. This chapter details the preparation and measurement of α-linolenic acid-derived phytoprostanes and phytofurans in human samples using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QToF-MS/MS).

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the sex differences in associations between GM characterized by shotgun sequencing, GM-derived short-chain fatty acids, and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure in 241 Hong Kong Chinese (113 men and 128 women; mean age, 54±6 years).

Federated learning (FL) allows model training from local data collected by edge/mobile devices while preserving data privacy, which has wide applicability to image and vision applications. A challenge is that client devices in FL usually have much more limited computation and communication resources compared to servers in a data center. To overcome this challenge, we propose PruneFL -a novel FL approach with adaptive and distributed parameter pruning, which adapts the model size during FL to reduce both communication and computation overhead and minimize the overall training time, while maintaining a similar accuracy as the original model.

Emerging evidence links dietary fiber with altered gut microbiota composition and bile acid signaling in maintaining metabolic health. Yeast β-glucan (Y-BG) is a dietary supplement known for its immunomodulatory effect, yet its impact on the gut microbiota and bile acid composition remains unclear. This study investigated whether dietary forms of Y-BG modulate these gut-derived signals.

Studies reported that increased intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) namely, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and lower the incidence of MI. Nonetheless, the cardioprotective effect of plant n-3-PUFA such as α-linolenic acid (ALA) in the diet is not conclusive.

Without proper intervention, acute inflammation could progress to chronic inflammation, resulting in the development of inflammatory diseases. Antioxidants, such as polyphenols, have been known to possess anti-oxidative properties which promote redox homeostasis.

To investigate the effects of nano-sized materials (n-TiO, n-ZnO, n-Ag) and their bulk-sized or ionic (b-TiO, b-ZnO, i-Ag) counterpart, we studied the status of oxidative stress and PUFA metabolism in THP-1 cells at low-toxic concentrations (<15% cytotoxicity) 6 h or 24 h after the particle exposures by LC/MS and microarray. N-Ag had a significant and sustained impact on cellular antioxidant defense, seen as incremental synthesis and accumulation of glutathione (GSH) in the cell, and reduction of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.

However, high temperature in food preparation, such as pan-frying, potentially degrades eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) of the n-3 PUFAs by heat oxidation. The addition of antioxidant condiments, and herbs in particular, may retard PUFA peroxidation and preserve EPA and DHA during pan-frying.

It is known that UVA exposure leads to photoaging, immunosuppression and skin cancer. Src homology 2 (SH2) domains represent the major class of protein domains in metazoans that interact with proteins phosphorylated on the amino acid residue tyrosine. Although current SH2 domain prediction algorithms perform well at predicting the sequences of phosphorylated peptides that are likely to result in the highest possible interaction affinity in the context of random peptide library screens, these algorithms do poorly at predicting the interaction potential of SH2 domains with physiologically derived protein sequences.

The removal of tumor together with the native liver in living donor liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma is challenged by a very close resection margin if the tumor abuts the inferior vena cava. This is in contrast to typical deceased donor liver transplantation where the entire retrohepatic inferior vena cava is included in total hepatectomy. Here we report a case of deroofing the retrohepatic vena cava in living donor liver transplantation for caudate hepatocellular carcinoma.
