Hypothesis: Encapsulation of sensitive water-soluble bioactive materials such as fragrances, polyphenols and enzymes poses an immense challenge with capsules templated from water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions. Generation of radicals, heating, and extreme pH that are necessary for shell formation through interfacial reactions may have undesired influences on the active ingredients and thus lower their activity.

The authors aim to develop siRNA therapeutics for cancer that can be administered systemically to target tumors and retard their growth. The efficacy of systemic delivery of siRNA to tumors with nanoparticles based on lipids or polymers is often compromised by their rapid clearance from the circulation by the liver. Here, multifunctional cationic and anionic siRNA nanoparticle formulations are described, termed receptor-targeted nanocomplexes (RTNs), that comprise peptides for siRNA packaging into nanoparticles and receptor-mediated cell uptake, together with lipids that confer nanoparticles with stealth properties to enhance stability in the circulation, and fusogenic properties to enhance endosomal release within the cell.

Few studies have examined individual socioeconomic status (SES) as a potential modifier of ambient temperature-health associations, especially for temperature-related hospitalizations. We fit penalized distributed lag non-linear models within generalized additive models to study the short-term associations (0-3 days) between temperature and hospital admissions stratified by common causes, age, and individual SES, as determined by whether patients received public assistance (PA) to cover their medical fee at the time of hospitalizations, during the hot season (May 15 to October 15) in Hong Kong for the years 2010-2019. We calculated the ratio of relative risk (RRR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) to statistically test the difference of the associations between PA groups.
