Background: Exposure of internal mammary vessels in autologous breast reconstruction often requires removal of a rib cartilage segment, which can lead to breast contour deformity. This study evaluated the use of diced cartilage (DC) to counteract substance loss in the microvascular anastomosis area.

Methods: This retrospective, single-center cohort study included all breast reconstructions in which DC was used from October 2021 to June 2023.

STAT: a fast, scalable, MinHash-based k-mer tool to assess Sequence Read Archive next-generation sequence submissions.

Sequence Read Archive submissions to the National Center for Biotechnology Information often lack useful metadata, which limits the utility of these submissions. We describe the Sequence Taxonomic Analysis Tool (STAT), a scalable k-mer-based tool for fast assessment of taxonomic diversity intrinsic to submissions, independent of metadata. We show that our MinHash-based k-mer tool is accurate and scalable, offering reliable criteria for efficient selection of data for further analysis by the scientific community, at once validating submissions while also augmenting sample metadata with reliable, searchable, taxonomic terms.

 The number of venous anastomoses advisable for a free flap continues to be controversial. Intrinsic transit time (ITT) is the time it takes dye during indocyanine green (ICG) microangiography to travel from the arterial to the venous anastomosis. ITT provides information on blood flow velocity and can predict postoperative circulatory complications.

Lymphocytes as an Indicator for Initial Kidney Function: A Single Center Analysis of Outcome after Alemtuzumab or Basiliximab Induction.

Alemtuzumab, an anti-CD52 T-cell and B-cell depleting monoclonal antibody, is established for induction therapy in renal transplantation (KTx). We herein provide a comparative analysis between alemtuzumab and basiliximab induction therapy and correlate lymphocyte depletion and recovery with the clinical course after KTx. This is a single center retrospective analysis of 225 patients/consecutive kidney transplantations treated with alemtuzumab for lymphocyte depletion and 205 recipients treated with basiliximab.

Background: The effect of cold ischemia (CI) in vascularized composite allotransplantation is unknown. We herein assess tissue-specific damage, acceptable CI time, and the effect of preservation solutions in a syngenic rat hindlimb transplant model.

Objectives: The effectiveness of a Semantic Feature Treatment (SFT) at increasing word retrieval accuracy of untreated words was examined in relation to the influence of the number of shared features with treated words. Generalization of these improvements to discourse was also examined.

Methods: Three adults with chronic aphasia completed 12 SFT sessions.

Trends in immunosuppression after pancreas transplantation: what is in the pipeline?

Purpose Of Review: To provide an overview of currently available immunosuppressive strategies and novel therapeutic developments in pancreas transplantation.

Recent Findings: From 1966 through 2012 more than 30 000 pancreas transplantations have been performed around the world with excellent patient and graft survival. However, drug-related side effects and toxicities remain to negatively affect long-term outcomes.

BioProject and BioSample databases at NCBI: facilitating capture and organization of metadata.

As the volume and complexity of data sets archived at NCBI grow rapidly, so does the need to gather and organize the associated metadata. Although metadata has been collected for some archival databases, previously, there was no centralized approach at NCBI for collecting this information and using it across databases. The BioProject database was recently established to facilitate organization and classification of project data submitted to NCBI, EBI and DDBJ databases.

Investigation of habitual pitch during free play activities for preschool-aged children.

Objective: This study is designed to compare the habitual pitch measured in two different speech activities (free play activity and traditionally used structured speech activity) for normally developing preschool-aged children to explore to what extent preschoolers vary their vocal pitch among different speech environments.

Methods: Habitual pitch measurements were conducted for 10 normally developing children (2 boys, 8 girls) between the ages of 31 months and 71 months during two different activities: (1) free play; and (2) structured speech. Speech samples were recorded using a throat microphone connected with a wireless transmitter in both activities.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information has created the dbGaP public repository for individual-level phenotype, exposure, genotype and sequence data and the associations between them. dbGaP assigns stable, unique identifiers to studies and subsets of information from those studies, including documents, individual phenotypic variables, tables of trait data, sets of genotype data, computed phenotype-genotype associations, and groups of study subjects who have given similar consents for use of their data.

Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute-phase reactant, known to mediate pro-inflammatory cellular responses. This study reports that CLA-1 (CD36 and LIMPII Analogous-1; human orthologue of the Scavenger Receptor Class B Type I (SR-BI)) mediates SAA uptake and downstream SAA signaling. Flow cytometry experiments revealed more than a 5-fold increase of Alexa-488 SAA uptake in HeLa cells stably transfected with CLA-1.

Patients And Methods: A structured interview for DSM-III, devised for "non patients", was applied to 203 men and 203 women, aged 11 to 90 years old, hospitalized in an internal medicine service of a public hospital.

The biomedical model has successfully reduced mother and child mortality and diseases during the labor and puerperal period. In the perinatal period, the mother and her offspring can also have psychosocial problems, that have been insufficiently studied and that we propose considering. Based on neurobiological information, on bonding theory and on a focus change in the everyday work of human behavior experts in maternity hospitals, we propose that perinatal mental health should have an important place and can be harmoniously articulated with the biomedical model.

The effects of speaking rate manipulation were examined in the velocity profiles of anticipatory lip protrusion gestures. Systematic changes in the shape, symmetry, and smoothness of the velocity profiles were observed as speaking rate was modulated across a wide range of self-selected rates, from fast to slow. Velocity profiles of movements produced at slower than normal speaking rates demonstrated greater asymmetry, irregularity, and differences in geometric form, compared to a normal and faster-than-normal rates.

[Development and evaluation of a measure scale of risk of mother-newborn infant relations].

The purpose of this work was to construct and assess a scale aimed to detect risky relationships between mothers and newborns that could predict future child abuse and neglect. The instrument was applied in two opportunities, by a trained midwife and by an expert in mental health, to a sample of 106 mother-newborn dyads. When both assessments were compared, the concordance to assess relationship risk was 99.

The role of target word stress in auditory comprehension by aphasic listeners.

The present investigation was designed to determine the influence of stressed word prosody on auditory comprehension by listeners with aphasia. Paragraph-length narratives were computer-edited to yield two conditions. In one condition, both the target words and the surrounding context were prosodically neutral; in the second condition, target words were stressed and the surrounding contexts were prosodically neutral.

An investigation of emphatic stress comprehension in adult aphasia: a replication.

The differential effects of normal and emphatic stress on the auditory comprehension performance of 9 aphasic and 5 normal adults were assessed. As a partial replication of Pashek and Brookshire (1982), four paragraph-length stimuli were used from the original study. Each paragraph was presented twice.
