Article Synopsis
  • * Analyzing data from a regional trauma center, the researchers found that only 6.1% of TRF patients were referred for acupuncture, and among those referred, 72.1% went through with it, with female patients being more likely to accept the treatment.
  • * The findings suggest that those with polytrauma were less likely to be referred for acupuncture, indicating a potential bias in referral practices, and highlight the need for more research on the effectiveness of acupuncture in recovery from TRF.

Recently, the food packaging industry has focused on developing an eco-friendly and sustainable food packaging system. This study describes the effect of beeswax on the physical, structural, and barrier properties of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyacrylic acid (PAA) composite film. The incorporation of beeswax improved the barrier properties against oxygen, water, and oil.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that leads to a high psychiatric, economic and systemic disease burden. A comprehensive understanding of AA epidemiology is essential for evaluating healthcare source utilization; however, a systematic approach to summarizing epidemiological data on AA is lacking.

Objectives: To investigate systematically the global, regional and national incidence and prevalence of AA.

The cholinergic system has been found to make an anti-inflammatory effect through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAIP), which suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by secreting acetylcholine, a major neurotransmitter. However, no studies have been conducted on the effects of CAIP on joint pain and inflammation. In this study, we investigated the effects of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) in knee arthritis.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines recommend testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for men with sexual dysfunction and testosterone deficiency. However, TRT is commonly promoted in men without testosterone deficiency and existing trials often do not clearly report participants' testosterone levels or testosterone-related symptoms. This review assesses the potential benefits and harms of TRT in men presenting with complaints of sexual dysfunction.

The FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) gene encodes a class III receptor tyrosine kinase that is expressed in hematopoietic stem cells. The mutations of FLT3 gene found in 30% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), leads to an abnormal constitutive activation of FLT3 kinase of the receptor and results in immature myeloblast cell proliferation. Although small molecule drugs targeting the FLT3 kinase have been approved, new FLT3 inhibitors are needed owing to the side effects and drug resistances arising from kinase domain mutations, such as D835Y and F691L.

Background And Aims: There are limited data on the association between uterine cervical cancer (UCC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the risk of UCC in patients with IBD. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.

To assess the effects of fosfomycin compared with other antibiotics as a prophylaxis for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in men undergoing transrectal prostate biopsies. We searched multiple databases and trial registries without publication language or status restrictions until 4 January 2022. Parallel-group randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies (NRS) were included.

Background: Treatments for clinically localized prostate cancer include radical prostatectomy, external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy, active surveillance, hormonal therapy, and watchful waiting. For external beam radiation therapy, oncological outcomes may be expected to improve as the dose of radiotherapy (RT) increases. However, radiation-mediated side effects on surrounding critical organs may also increase.

: Perioperative probiotic administration in patients who undergo gastrointestinal surgery can reduce postoperative infectious complications. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotics on postoperative outcomes in patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery. : For this study, we followed the protocol published by PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021247277).

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares high ligation (HL) and low ligation (LL) techniques in colorectal cancer surgery to assess their impact on various outcomes.
  • The search resulted in 12 studies, but findings showed very low certainty regarding HL's effect on overall survival and significant uncertainty about its impact on postoperative complications.
  • Results indicated that HL may affect bowel and sexual functions differently compared to LL, highlighting the need for more rigorous research to clarify these functional outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Nocturia is a troublesome urinary symptom in men, and the Korean Urological Association (KUA) has created guidelines regarding the use of desmopressin, a synthetic version of vasopressin, for its treatment.
  • A systematic review was conducted to evaluate patient outcomes and to form recommendations, involving various expert groups such as the Korean Continence Society and KUA.
  • The guidelines recommend using desmopressin over placebo or alpha-blocker monotherapy for nocturia in men, and suggest its combination with alpha-blockers, but both recommendations are based on low certainty evidence.

Objectives: To assess the effects of prostatic arterial embolisation (PAE) compared to other procedures for treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Methods: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), as well as non-randomised studies (NRSs) enrolling men with BPH undergoing PAE vs other surgical interventions via a comprehensive search up until 8 November 2021. Two independent reviewers screened the literature, extracted data, assessed risk of bias, performed statistical analyses by using a random-effects model, and rated the certainty of evidence (CoE) of RCTs and NRSs.

Background: A variety of minimally invasive surgical approaches are available as an alternative to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) is a relatively new, minimally invasive treatment approach.

Objectives: To assess the effects of PAE compared to other procedures for treatment of LUTS in men with BPH.
