Bedside ultrasound-guided aspiration and corticosteroid injection of a baker's cyst in a patient with osteoarthritis and recurrent knee pain.

Baker's cyst accompanying knee osteoarthritis represents a common cause of knee pain presenting to the emergency department. In this case report, a 56-year-old male presented with atraumatic left knee pain and swelling. Radiographically, he had tricompartmental osteoarthritis and was found to have a baker's cyst on duplex ultrasound.

Air-medical transport experience in emergency medicine residencies: then and now.

Objective: The appropriate activation and effective utilization of air-medical transport (AMT) services is an important skill for emergency medicine physicians in the United States. Previous studies have demonstrated variability with regards to emergency medical services (EMS) experience during residency training. This study was designed to evaluate the nature and extent of AMT training of the emergency medicine residency programs in the United States.

Strategies to improve sleep during extended search and rescue operations.

Objective: This study investigated strategies to improve sleeping conditions during search and rescue operations during disaster response.

Methods: Forty members of the Montgomery County (Maryland) Urban Search and Rescue Team were surveyed for individual sleep habits and sleeping aids used during extended deployments. Team members were also asked to suggest methods to improve sleep on future deployments.

Imaging cortical association tracts in the human brain using diffusion-tensor-based axonal tracking.

Diffusion-tensor fiber tracking was used to identify the cores of several long-association fibers, including the anterior (ATR) and posterior (PTR) thalamic radiations, and the uncinate (UNC), superior longitudinal (SLF), inferior longitudinal (ILF), and inferior fronto-occipital (IFO) fasciculi. Tracking results were compared to existing anatomical knowledge, and showed good qualitative agreement. Guidelines were developed to reproducibly track these fibers in vivo.
