Saturated fatty acids have been considered major contributing factors in type 2 diabetes, whereas unsaturated fatty acids have beneficial effects for preventing the development of diabetes. Vitamin D Receptor Gene TaqI, BsmI and FokI Polymorphisms in Korean Patients with Tuberculosis.

Background: The active metabolite (1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol) of vitamin D (25-hydroxycholecalciferol) leads to activation of macrophages and deficiency of vitamin D seems to be involved in the risk of tuberculosis. The effects of vitamin D are exerted by interaction with the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and may be influenced by polymorphism in the VDR gene. In this study, variation in the VDR gene was investigated in Korean population with tuberculosis.

Pentraxin 3: a novel and independent prognostic marker in ischemic stroke.

Objective: Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is one of the pattern-recognition receptors related to the initial step of the immune response with C-reactive protein, but the physiologic and pathologic functions are not fully understood. The purpose of the current study was to determine the impact of PTX3 levels on mortality after ischemic stroke.

Methods: We consecutively enrolled 376 patients who had ischemic stroke between September 2004 and September 2006.

Validation of a simple computerized tool for measuring spinal and pelvic parameters.

Object: Recent studies have emphasized measuring the sagittal vertical axis (SVA) and pelvic parameters (pelvic incidence, sacral slope, and pelvic tilt) when evaluating spinal disorders. An accurate and reproducible measurement is important for a reliable result. Although computerized measurement is more consistent than manual measurement, computerized measurement requires an expensive software program, the need to transfer images to a workstation, and additional education for users.

Beyond castration-defining future directions in the hormonal treatment of prostate cancer.

It is now almost 70 years since Charles Huggins described the relationship between testosterone and the prostate gland. Arguably defining one of the first targeted therapies, the reduction of testosterone to castrate levels remains unaltered as the standard of care for men with metastatic prostate cancer. The failure of castration to permanently control the growth of prostate cancer leads to a state called castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).

Postoperative survival and ambulatory outcome in metastatic spinal tumors : prognostic factor analysis.

Objective: The purposes of this study are to estimate postoperative survival and ambulatory outcome and to identify prognostic factors thereafter of metastatic spinal tumors in a single institute.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 182 patients who underwent surgery for a metastatic spinal tumor from January 1987 to January 2009 retrospectively. Twelve potential prognostic factors (age, gender, primary tumor, extent and location of spinal metastases, interval between primary tumor diagnosis and metastatic spinal cord compression, preoperative treatment, surgical approach and extent, preoperative Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, Nurick score, Tokuhashi and Tomita score) were investigated.

The effect of anemia and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on cognitive impairment in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Anemia and subcortical ischemic change might be associated with increased risks for cognitive impairment among the elderly. This study examined the associations among anemia, WMH and cognitive function in patients with amnestic MCI. We recruited 278 subjects with amnestic MCI from the Clinical Research Center for Dementia of South Korea (CREDOS), a hospital-based cohort study.

Topography of cortical thinning areas associated with hippocampal atrophy (HA) in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Prior studies have shown that patients with AD have decreased functional or structural connectivity between the hippocampus and other brain areas. To the best of our knowledge, however, there have been no studies investigating the topography of cortical thinning areas and correlations with HA using surface based morphometry of three-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images. Cortical thickness was measured using SBM, and hippocampal volume was measured using an automated method, in 219 patients with AD and 54 subjects with no cognitive impairment (NCI).

Background: Carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) is an abnormal communication between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. The pathogenesis of spontaneous CCF remains unclear, although sinus thrombosis is known to be a predisposing factor for dural arteriovenous fistula. Because spontaneous CCFs are mainly of the dural type, we considered that thrombogenic conditions, such as, protein S deficiency might be associated with CCF.

We report on a rare case of fluconazole induced fixed drug eruption in a 62-year old female patient. She was referred to our department for multiple erythematous itchy maculopatches on the face, neck, both upper arms, and trunk area, which had occurred over the previous 6 months. Her attending physician prescribed fluconazole for treatment of onychomycosis.

Resumption of ambulatory status after surgery for nonambulatory patients with epidural spinal metastasis.

Adipocytokines and ischemic stroke: differential associations between stroke subtypes.

Regulation of arterial blood pressure by Akt1-dependent vascular relaxation.

Here, we show that stimulation of vascular endothelial cells with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) results in vascular relaxation through Akt1-dependent activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and nitric oxide (NO) production. Stimulation of both human umbilical artery endothelial cells and abdominal aortic vessels with PDGF induced NO production.

Genetic characterization of H7N2 influenza virus isolated from pigs.

Because pigs have respiratory epitheliums which express both α2-3 and α2-6 linked sialic acid as receptors to influenza A viruses, they are regarded as mixing vessel for the generation of pandemic influenza viruses through genetic reassortment. A H7N2 influenza virus (A/swine/KU/16/2001) was isolated from pig lungs collected from the slaughterhouse. All eight genes of the influenza virus were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis indicated that A/swine/KU/16/2001 originated in Hong Kong and genetic reassortment had occurred between the avian H7N2 and H5N3 influenza viruses.

Resection frequency map after awake resective surgery for non-lesional neocortical epilepsy involving eloquent areas.

Background: The resection of eloquent areas is challenging due to postoperative neurological deficits. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and risk of awake brain surgery for non-lesional epilepsy involving the eloquent areas or their adjacent areas and to advocate the generation of a resection frequency map.

Methods: We enrolled 55 patients who underwent awake surgery between 1994 and 2007 for non-lesional epilepsy involving the primary sensori-motor or language areas.

Decoding of temporal visual information from electrically evoked retinal ganglion cell activities in photoreceptor-degenerated retinas.

Purpose: To restore visual function via the prosthetic stimulation of retina, visual information must be properly represented in the electrically evoked neural activity of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). In this study, the RGC responses in photoreceptor-degenerated retinas were shown to actually encode temporal information on visual input when they were stimulated by biphasic pulse trains with amplitude modulation.

Methods: Multiple RGC spike trains were recorded from rd1 mouse retinal patches mounted on planar microelectrode arrays while being stimulated by pulse trains with amplitudes modulated by the intensity variation of a natural scene.

HO-1 Induced by Cilostazol Protects Against TNF-α-associated Cytotoxicity via a PPAR-γ-dependent Pathway in Human Endothelial Cells.

A large body of evidence has indicated that induction of endogenous antioxidative proteins seems to be a reasonable strategy for delaying the progression of cell injury. In our previous study, cilostazol was found to increase the expression of the antioxidant enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in synovial cells. Thus, the present study was undertaken to examine whether cilostazol is able to counteract tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced cell death in endothelial cells via the induction of HO-1 expression.
