NIRS as a biomarker of bowel ischaemia & surgical pathology: A meta-analysis of studies in newborns.

Objective: We performed a meta-analysis on Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) as a biomarker of bowel ischaemia.

Summary Background Data: NIRS allows non-invasive assessment of gastrointestinal regional oxygen saturation (GrSO). Studies to date have focused on the feasibility of NIRS in clinical practice and its reproducibility.

Interprofessional education in geriatric medicine: towards best practice. A controlled before-after study of medical and nursing students.

Objectives: To investigate nursing and medical students' readiness for interprofessional learning before and after implementing geriatric interprofessional education (IPE), based on problem-based learning (PBL) case scenarios. To define the optimal number of geriatric IPE sessions, the size and the ratio of participants from each profession in the learner groups, the outcomes related to the Kirkpatrick four-level typology of learning evaluation, students' concerns about joint learning and impact of geriatric IPE on these concerns. The study looked at the perception of roles and expertise of the 'other' profession in interprofessional teams, and students' choice of topics for future sessions.

The 2014 Varsity Medical Ethics Debate: should we allow genetic information to be patented?

The 2014 Varsity Medical Ethics debate convened upon the motion: "This house believes that genetic information should not be commoditised". This annual debate between students from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, now in its sixth year, provided the starting point for arguments on the subject. The present article brings together and extends many of the arguments put forward during the debate.
