With increasing interest in plant-based compounds that can enhance sleep quality without the side effects of caffeine, Alpinia galanga (AG) has emerged as a promising herbal supplement for improving mental alertness. This study assessed the impact of water-soluble AG extract on sleep quality; the activity of GABAergic, glutamatergic, and serotonergic receptors; and concentrations of dopamine and serotonin in the brains of mice. The study employed two experimental models using BALB/c mice to examine the impact of pentobarbital-induced sleep and caffeine-induced insomnia.

Bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) has garnered significant attention due to its critical roles in leukemia pathogenesis, cancer metastasis, and bone marrow failure. BMAT is a metabolically active, distinct tissue that differs from other fat depots. Marrow adipocytes, closely interacting with hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and osteoblasts, play a pivotal role in regulating their functions.

Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS), caused by a heterozygous gain of function variant of the NOTCH2 gene, is a rare skeletal dysplasia. Although the main presentation is acro-osteolysis, osteoporosis, and facial dysmorphism, having a wide range of clinical manifestations creates diagnostic difficulties. Here, a 15-year-old male patient with HCS who had no complaints until this age except for two short bone fractures and one vertebral collapse fracture due to a fall was reported.

Background/aim: Circadian rhythm proteins (CRPs) play critical roles in both physiological and pathophysiological conditions, including neurodegenerative disorders. As members of CRPs, the nuclear receptors Rev-Erbα/β regulate circadian rhythm particularly by inhibiting Bmal1 protein and are involved in the neuroinflammation and cell death processes. However, their roles in the development of neuronal injury after traumatic brain injury (TBI) were largely unexplored, and so were investigated in the present study.

The kinetochore, an intricate macromolecular protein complex located on chromosomes, plays a pivotal role in orchestrating chromosome segregation. It functions as a versatile platform for microtubule assembly, diligently monitors microtubule binding fidelity, and acts as a force coupler. Comprising over 100 distinct proteins, many of which exist in multiple copies, the kinetochore's composition dynamically changes throughout the cell cycle, responding to specific timing and conditions.

Heroin addiction is one of the neuropsychiatric burdens that affects many genetic and epigenetic systems. While it is known that heroin may change the expressions of some genes in the brain during dependence, there is no detailed study related to which gene are mostly affected. Therefore, in the current study, we aimed to determine alterations in the miRNA profiles of rats' brains for providing a detailed analysis of molecular mechanisms in heroin addiction-related toxicology.

The incidence of infections attributed to antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens has increased exponentially over the recent decades reaching 1.27 million deaths worldwide in 2019. Without intervention, these infections are predicted to cause up to 10 million deaths a year and incur costs of up to 100 trillion US dollars globally by 2050.

Although microplastic (MP) pollution in aquatic ecosystems has been a critical issue, a significant portion of previous studies has been limited to marine environments. Few studies have evaluated MP abundance in inland waters, and those that exist often ignore seasonal variations. This study aimed to assess the seasonal variations in microplastic (MP) abundance in the İskenderun Technical University (İSTE) Pond.

Background: The primary objectives of our research were to analyze Lyme serology results from pediatric patients, identify the clinical reasons for ordering these tests, and assess the clinical relevance of the serology results in the context of Lyme disease.

Methods: Our study, conducted at a reference pediatric hospital in a non-endemic region for Lyme disease, included all pediatric patients for whom Lyme serology was requested. ELISA and Western blot results were documented.

Background: The global initiative to eliminate measles, spearheaded by the World Health Organization, has yet to achieve its intended goals. In Turkey, despite robust vaccination strategies, recent increases in measles cases have been attributed to vaccine hesitancy and irregular migration. This study evaluates measles serology within a pediatric population to determine the impact of vaccination regimens on immunity.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on assessing microplastic pollution in commonly consumed fish species by examining their gills and gastrointestinal tracts to determine the abundance and types of microplastics present.
  • - Analysis revealed an average of 0.8 microplastics per fish in the gastrointestinal tract and 0.3 in the gills, with the majority being fiber-shaped and primarily black or blue in color, crafted from various polymers like polyethylene and polypropylene.
  • - An ecological risk assessment indicated low to medium hazard levels for the fish species studied, with demersal and bentopelagic species being more susceptible to microplastic toxicity based on the harmfulness of the detected polymers.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to explore the relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and nutrition. ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder, has been examined in relation to dietary factors through various metabolic pathways, with a focus on the role of nutrition in symptom management. Unhealthy dietary patterns, particularly those characteristics of Western diets, are believed to exacerbate ADHD symptoms through these mechanisms.

Introduction: The most common form of priapism is ischaemic and its prevalence in men has increased in recent years as a result of intracavernosal drug use. Currently, there is no approved specific treatment for ischaemic priapism other than cavernosal aspiration, which can only provide detumescence. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of intracavernosal mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy in an ischaemic priapism model.

Brain injury develops from a complex series of pathophysiological phases, resulting in acute necrotic or delayed apoptotic cell death after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Inhibition of apoptotic cell death is critical for the treatment of acute neurodegenerative disorders, such as TBI. Here, we investigated the role of phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) in the development of neuronal injury, particularly in apoptotic cell death.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, driven mainly by chronic hepatitis infections and metabolic disorders, which highlights the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. Sirtuins, particularly SIRT1 are crucial in HCC pathogenesis, making it a promising drug target. Indole-based molecules show potential as therapeutic agents by interacting with key proteins like sirtuins involved in cancer progression.

Purpose: Unfortunately, treatment of patients with uveal melanoma (UM) with metastatic disease is limited. Twenty percent of patients with UM harbor a mutation in the splicing factor gene SF3B1, suggesting that aberrant spliceosome function plays a vital role in tumorigenesis. Splicing inhibitors exploit the preferential sensitivity of spliceosome-compromised leukemic cells to these compounds.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury, is a common condition with the highest incidence rate among neurodegenerative disorders and poses a significant public health burden. Various methods are used in the treatment of TBI, but the effects of cold-induced traumatic brain injury have not been thoroughly studied. In this context, vinpocetine (VPN), derived from Vinca minor, exhibits notable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
