Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is characterized by deep-seated, highly inflamed, and painful lumps/abscesses, fistulae, and sinus tracts that grow extensively deep in the dermis and are highly immunogenic in nature. In about one-third of the HS patients there is strong evidence for the role of γ-secretase mutations along with dysregulated Notch signaling. However, the contribution of dysregulated Notch signaling in HS pathogenesis in relation to hair follicle alterations and hyper-activation of the immune system remains undefined.

Objectives: Self-compassion and psychological flexibility appear to benefit wellbeing and quality of life (QoL) in the general population and in people with long-term conditions like Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). However, both variables share similarities and their unique roles in relation to distress and QoL in people with diabetes over time are not clear.

Design: This was a longitudinal study with online assessments of self-compassion, psychological inflexibility, distress (depression, anxiety, diabetes-distress), and QoL at baseline (T1) and six (T2) and 12 months (T3).

Aberrant remodeling of the asthmatic airway is not well understood but is thought to be attributable in part to mechanical compression of airway epithelial cells. Here, we examine compression-induced expression and secretion of the extracellular matrix protein tenascin C (TNC) from well-differentiated primary human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells grown in an air-liquid interface culture. We measured mRNA expression using RT-qPCR and secreted TNC protein using Western blotting and ELISA.

Article Synopsis
  • End-stage heart failure related to arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) presents unique challenges for heart transplantation, particularly due to right ventricular failure and potential ventricular arrhythmias.
  • A study analyzed data from the Johns Hopkins ARVC Registry, identifying 63 patients who underwent heart transplantation, with a focus on a subset of 9 patients treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital, revealing a predominance of right ventricular failure and related complications.
  • The findings highlight that genetic variants were common, especially in the plakophilin-2 (PKP2) gene, and that management strategies included inotropes and ECMO, but there were frequent contraindications for their use.
