Selecting patients for phase I cancer trials is crucial to ensure a sufficient life expectancy. Frail patients, better suited for palliative care, should not be exposed to new drugs with minimal benefit. Enrolling patients at high risk of early death can jeopardize the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Aprotinin was taken off the market in 2008 due to safety concerns but was reintroduced in France in 2018. A study was conducted to compare its effectiveness with tranexamic acid in high-risk cardiac surgery patients.
  • Economic analysis showed no significant difference in overall costs between the two treatments, but the tranexamic acid group incurred higher costs for blood products.
  • The initial higher cost of aprotinin is compensated by the greater expenses of blood products required for patients treated with tranexamic acid.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on albinism, a genetic condition where melanin production is affected, highlighting the variability in its forms and their impact on ocular health.
  • A retrospective analysis was performed on 127 patients with oculocutaneous albinism from a specific hospital in France, assessing their genetic data and visual acuity.
  • The findings revealed no significant differences in visual acuity across the main forms of albinism, but significant differences in ametropia were observed, along with a high prevalence of grade 4 foveal hypoplasia among patients, independent of the gene involved.

Background: The benefit-risk ratio of prophylactic non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and high-flow nasal oxygen therapy (HFNC-O) during the early stage of blunt chest trauma remains controversial because of limited data. The main objective of this study was to compare the rate of endotracheal intubation between two NIV strategies in high-risk blunt chest trauma patients.

Methods: The OptiTHO trial was a randomized, open-label, multicenter trial over a two-year period.

Background And Objectives: Status epilepticus (SE) is a life-threatening emergency requiring a prompt assessment of patient prognosis to guide management. MRI allows the identification of peri-ictal MRI abnormalities (PMAs) and provides insight into brain structural modifications induced by SE. However, little is known about the significance of PMA in SE prognosis.

High-concentration topical capsaicin is used as a second-line treatment for neuropathic pain. Transient, mild burning sensation and erythema are expected adverse drug reactions. Here, we report the first case of second degree burn after the application of a high-concentration topical capsaicin patch with secondary mobility sequelae.

Tumor growth, progression, and therapy resistance are crucial factors in the prognosis of cancer. The properties of three-dimensional (3D) tumor-like organoids (tumoroids) more closely resemble in vivo tumors compared to two-dimensionally cultured cells and are therefore effectively used for assays and drug screening. We here established a repurposed drug for novel anticancer research and therapeutics using a 3D tumoroid-based screening system.
