This paper presents a novel method for predicting the migration of heavy metal contaminants in soils that contain heavy metal pollutants deep within the particles, which may cause delayed leaching. The proposed approach, the intraparticle pore-diffusion (IntraPD) model, incorporates both intraparticle diffusion and sorption equilibrium and is utilized to simulate batch leaching tests of heavy metal-contaminated soils using the finite difference method. The IntraPD model can solve the leakage of heavy metals from contaminated soil particles of arbitrary particle size distribution as a one-dimensional, polar-symmetric problem in the spherical coordinate system, assuming the soil particles to be porous perfect spheres.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons. Although repeat expansion in C9orf72 is its most common cause, the pathogenesis of ALS isn't fully clear. A 65-year-old man presented with a slight headache and transient visual disturbance. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed occlusion of the left internal carotid artery (ICA) and acute brain infarctions in both hemispheres, and a blood examination indicated inflammation. Recent findings indicate that the human cardiovascular system is regulated by a cortical network comprised of the insular cortex (Ic), anterior cingulate gyrus, and amygdala which is necessary for the regulation of the central autonomic network system. Alzheimer disease (AD) affects the Ic at a preclinical stage. The pathology of AD at the Ic is suggested to predispose the cardiovascular system to detrimental changes such as increased blood pressure variability (BPV).

We report a case of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) that was diagnosed at the age of 90. After initially developing visual loss in the right eye, a patient was diagnosed with optic neuritis. Although treatment with methylprednisolone therapy provided relief, 3 months later she developed optic neuritis on the other side.

Prefoldin is a hexameric molecular chaperone found in the cytosol of archaea and eukaryotes. Its hexameric complex is built from two related classes of subunits, and has the appearance of a jellyfish: Its body consists of a double β-barrel assembly with six long tentacle-like coiled coils protruding from it. In Alzheimer's, the disease-related protein Tau is hyperphosphorylated and aggregates into neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). The cis isomer of the phosphorylated Thr231-Pro232 has been proposed as a precursor of aggregation ('Cistauosis'), but this aggregation scheme is not yet completely accepted. The cardiovascular system is regulated by a central autonomic network (CAN) consisting of the insular cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, and amygdala. Because the insular cortex often tends to be damaged in patients with herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis, the autonomic instability observed in these patients was suggested to be moderated by an insular cortex lesion. Here, we report the case of a 51-year-old Japanese male who was hospitalized following a collapse 5 days earlier; he was diagnosed as herpes encephalitis.

The Leverett concept is used conventionally to model the relationship between the capillary pressures and the degrees of saturation in the water-nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL)-air three-phase system in porous media. In this paper, the limitation of the Leverett concept that the concept is not applicable in the case of nonspreading NAPLs is discussed through microscopic consideration. A new concept that can be applied in the case of nonspreading NAPLs as well as spreading NAPLs is then proposed.

We measured the critical concentration of actin polymerized with different polymerization ions and bound divalent cations at low temperatures and estimated thermodynamic parameters. The entropy and enthalpy changes of actin polymerization were 36-55 (cal/mol K) and 2-8 (kcal/mol), respectively, with some exceptions. Both the entropy and enthalpy changes of the polymerization of Ca -actin were sensitive to the polymerization ion (K or Na ): ΔS = 39 or 36 (cal/mol K), ΔΗ= 3.

Actin filaments, the actin-myosin complex and the actin-tropomyosin complex were observed by a tip-scan atomic force microscope (AFM), which was recently developed by Olympus as the AFM part of a correlative microscope. This newly developed AFM uses cantilevers of similar size as stage-scan AFMs to improve substantially the spatial and temporal resolution. Such an approach has previously never been possible by a tip-scan system, in which a cantilever moves in the x, y and z directions.

Thiosulfate dehydrogenase is known to play a significant role in thiosulfate oxidation in the acidophilic, obligately chemolithoautotroph, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. Enzyme activity measured using ferricyanide as the electron acceptor was detected in cell extracts of A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 grown on tetrathionate or sulfur, but no activity was detected in ferrous iron-grown cells.

An OmpA family protein (FopA) previously reported as one of the major outer membrane proteins of an acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was characterized with emphasis on the modification by heat and the interaction with peptidoglycan. A 30-kDa band corresponding to the FopA protein was detected in outer membrane proteins extracted at 75°C or heated to 100°C for 10 min prior to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). However, the band was not detected in outer membrane proteins extracted at ≤40°C and without boiling prior to electrophoresis.

Iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in a treatment plant of acid rock drainage (ARD) from a pyrite mine in Yanahara, Okayama prefecture, Japan, were analyzed using the gene (cbbL) encoding the large subunit of ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO). Activity-oligomeric assembly relationships using octaethylene glycol dodecyl ether (C12E8) solubilized pig gastric H/K-ATPase (unmodified H/K-ATPase) or H/K-ATPase modified with Fluorescein 5'-isothiocyanate (FITC-H/K-ATPase) were examined. The amount of oligomeric species in FITC-H/K-ATPase, which retained little H/K-ATPase activity was estimated by a single-molecule detection technique using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Solubilization of the FITC-H/K-ATPase reduced the potassium-dependent p-nitrophenyl phosphatase (K-pNPPase) activity to around 5% of the level of the membrane-bound enzyme with the formation of 50% protomer and 40% diprotomer.

The effects of cyanide, azide, and 2-n-Heptyl-4-hydroxy-quinoline-N-oxide (HQNO) on the oxidation of ferrous ion or elemental sulfur with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans NASF-1 cells grown in iron- or sulfur-medium were examined. The iron oxidation of both iron- and sulfur-grown cells was strongly inhibited by cyanide and azide, but not by HQNO. Sulfur oxidation was relatively resistant to cyanide and azide, and inhibited by HQNO.
