The aim of our study was to analyze the expression of one of the markers of progenitor cell of different cell types - CD 117 (C-kit) - in human pancreas during prenatal development. The pancreas of human embryos and fetuses at 4-28 weeks of gestation as well as of infants aged up to 2nd postnatal month, was studied. In histological sections, the immunocytochemical reactions were performed with the antibodies against C-kit, insulin and glucagon.

The work is devoted to consequent expression of different cell types' protein markers such as vimentin, desmin, cytokeratins 7, 18, 19, stem cell markers CD34 and Bcl-2 at early stages of human prenatal development. Desmin was revealed in sinusoidal liver cells on 3.5-12 weeks of gestation, in mesenchymal cells of ventral mesentery and hepatoblasts on the 4-7 accordingly.

The antidiabetic effect of a new organic derivative of vanadium(IV) oxide with isonicotinic acid hydrazide (compound no. 8), as manifested by the action upon the alpha and beta cell populations in Langerhans islands of the pancreas, was studied in rats with alloxane diabetes model in comparison to the analogous effect of the inorganic drug vanadyl sulfate. The hypoglycemic activity of compound no.

The population of thyroid C-cells of female rabbits with ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis was studied using immunohistochemical method with antibodies against calcitonin (CT) and morphometrically. The development of osteoporosis was confirmed using radiology and densitometry. 8 weeks after the operation, after the detection of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria, some of the animals were given a correcting treatment with calcium-containing drug and vitamin D3 or with a combination of calcium drug with hormonal estrogen-containing drug.

This review regards the Ito cells, which constitute one of the four types of liver sinusoidal cells. These cells synthesize many cytokines and extracellular matrix proteins. The Ito cells make an important link in retinoid metabolism.

Intestinal microflora in healthy rats and its changes under the conditions of experimental chronic toxic hepatitis were studied. The study revealed that in intact animals the microflora of the small intestine was represented by bacteria of the genera Escherichia, Enterobacter, Moraxella, Alcaligenes, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus. Bacteria of the genera Escherichia, Enterobacter, Moraxella, Alcaligenes, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium and Clostridium were isolated from the large intestine.

The organ culture of the liver of a 14 day old rat embryo was used for immunohistochemical recognition of the available cell types. This culture contains the tissue explant, confluent monolayer cells and a zone of single cells (ZSC). At the start of cultivation a monolayer is formed at the expense of cells slipping down together from the explant, and later these cells were seen to migrate actively from the explant and to proliferate.

The efficacy of corneregel, a drug containing pantothenic acid, a component of coenzyme A, in healing of corneal wounds has been evaluated. The study was carried out on 19 rabbits (38 eyes) with standard corneal defect made with a 5-mm trephine for lamellar transplantation of the cornea, divided into 2 groups: 1) instillations of corneregel (10 eyes) and 0.25% levomycetin solution (10 eyes) and 2) 20% solcoseryl gel (9 eyes) and 0.

We have used biochemical and immunohistochemical methods to study lipid peroxidation and activation of Ito cells in rat liver after a single administration of lead nitrate, a "direct mitogen". Lead nitrate was shown to injure hepatocytes through an increased lipid peroxidation. Response to the injury included increase in the proliferative activity of parenchymal and sinusoidal liver cells.

The presence of desmin is used to identify the Ito cells in rat liver and to evaluate the purity of separated and cultured cells. The present study was conducted to evaluate the expression of cytoskeletal (with special emphasis on desmin) and intercellular matrix proteins in cultured rat liver Ito cells. The Ito cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion of rat liver and purified by single-step Nycodenz gradient.

Expression of cytokeratins nos. 7 and 19 has been examined during pre- and postnatal ontogenesis in rat liver. Cells expressing cytokeratin no.

During prenatal ontogenesis of mammals, liver plays a role as the hemopoietic organ. We have studied the distribution of hepatocytes (antigenic markers--cytokeratins No 8 and 18) and Ito cells (antigenic marker--desmin) in the liver and the interaction of these two cell classes with hemopoietic cells. At days 14 and 15 of embryonic development, nonhemopoietic liver cells had many processes, expressed desmin and were stained with antibodies against cytokeratins No 8 and 18.

On the model of allotransplantation of m. lumbricalis, previously subjected to acute total ischemia at temperature 37-38 degrees it was shown that morphological integrity and characteristic immunohistochemical properties of the muscle remain only during two hours of the thermic ischemia. A week later surviving muscular fibres (MF) and newly forming muscular tubules (MT) were found in the transplants of the muscle.

The influence of hypothermia on the development of the ischemic disorders was studied using allotransplantation of the rat skeletal muscle (m. lumbricalis) to the anterior chamber of the eye after different period of ischemia. The morphological and immunohistochemical (monoclonal antibodies to heavy chain of the fast myosin, PAP-method) data were found confirming that hypothermia (2-4 degrees C) prolongs the period of the ischemic disorders first appearance by 5 h (from 6 to 11 h) if compared with development of ischemia in the muscle at 21-23 degrees C.

The equal relative content of LDH H and M subunits has been detected in the soleus muscle of the rat anterior eye chamber. M subunit prevalence over H subunit was revealed after transplantation of the muscle with a spinal cord segment. It is suggested that nervous system controls differential expression of LDH subunits.
