Temperate forest soils are considered significant methane (CH) sinks, but other methane sources and sinks within these forests, such as trees, litter, deadwood, and the production of volatile organic compounds are not well understood. Improved understanding of all CH fluxes in temperate forests could help mitigate CH emissions from other sources and improve the accuracy of global greenhouse gas budgets. This review highlights the characteristics of temperate forests that influence CH flux and assesses the current understanding of the CH cycle in temperate forests, with a focus on those managed for specific purposes.

Traditional medical artificial intelligence models that are approved for clinical use restrict themselves to single-modal data ( e.g ., images only), limiting their applicability in the complex, multimodal environment of medical diagnosis and treatment.

This updated meta-synthesis explores further dimensions of the lived experience of severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SE-AN) since recent contention regarding proposed "terminal anorexia nervosa (T-AN)". The paper aims to update the original synthesis and to situate participant responses to the category of "T-AN". Thus, extending the proposed conceptualization of the SE-AN experience.

Wildfires are a significant threat to human health, in part through degraded air quality. Prescribed burning can reduce wildfire severity but can also lead to an increase in air pollution. The complexities of fires and atmospheric processes lead to uncertainties when predicting the air quality impacts of fire and make it difficult to fully assess the costs and benefits of an expansion of prescribed fire.

Background: Morphea, or localized scleroderma, is an inflammatory, fibrosing skin disorder that can be progressive and debilitating. Infrared thermography frequently has false positive results. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of multispectral imaging to predict disease progression in children with morphea.

Biomass burning is a major contributor to ambient air pollution worldwide, and the accurate characterization of biomass burning plume behavior is an important consideration for air quality models that attempt to reproduce these emissions. Smoke plume injection height, or the vertical level into which the combustion emissions are released, is an important consideration for determining plume behavior, transport, and eventual impacts. This injection height is dependent on several fire properties, each with estimates and uncertainties in terms of historical fire emissions inventories.

Background: Severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SE-AN), is a serious and persistent illness, despite 'state of the art' treatment. Criteria have been theoretically proposed, but not tested, and may not adequately capture illness complexity, which potentially inhibits treatment refinements. The clinical reality of death as an outcome for some people who experience SE-AN (1 in 20) and broadening access to voluntary assisted dying, further complicates the field, which is undeveloped regarding more fundamental concepts such as nosology, treatment, recovery definitions and alternative conceptualisations of SE-AN.

A number of bacterial species are found in high abundance in the faeces of healthy breast-fed infants, an occurrence that is understood to be, at least in part, due to the ability of these bacteria to metabolize human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). HMOs are the third most abundant component of human milk after lactose and lipids, and represent complex sugars which possess unique structural diversity and are resistant to infant gastrointestinal digestion. Thus, these sugars reach the infant distal intestine intact, thereby serving as a fermentable substrate for specific intestinal microbes, including Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and especially infant-associated Bifidobacterium spp.

The acoustic environment an animal experiences early in life shapes the structure and function of its auditory system. This process of experience-dependent development is thought to be primarily orchestrated by potentiation and depression of synapses, but plasticity of intrinsic voltage dynamics may also contribute. Here, we show that in juvenile male and female zebra finches, neurons in a cortical-level auditory area, the caudal mesopallium (CM), can rapidly change their firing dynamics.

Background: Severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SE-AN) is amongst the most impairing of all mental illnesses. Collective uncertainties about SE-AN nosology impacts treatment refinement. Qualitative research, particularly lived experience literature, can contribute to a process of revision and enrichment of understanding the SE-AN experience and further develop treatment interventions.

Radiation-induced morphea (RIM) is a rare but recognized late complication of radiotherapy. It was first described in 1905, not long after the initial discovery of X-rays by Roentgen. Characterized by the deposition of excess collagen in the dermis, it results in thickening of the skin.

Porokeratotic adnexal ostial nevus (PAON) is a term encompassing porokeratotic eccrine ostial and dermal duct naevus (PEODDN) and porokeratotic eccrine and hair follicle naevus (PEHFN). We present the case of a 7-year-old girl who presented with hyperkeratotic verrucous papules in a blaschkolinear distribution on the sole of her left foot.

Background: Current evidence-based treatments for adult anorexia nervosa (AN) have limitations, with high attrition, very poor outcomes for 20% of people, and no clearly superior manualised therapy for adults with AN. Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) was designed as a control treatment but has evolved as a valid first line treatment. The present paper aims to provide an overview of the evidence base for SSCM and a pedagogical reconceptualization with expansion by theoretical integration (TI).

Deforestation and drainage has made Indonesian peatlands susceptible to burning. Large fires occur regularly, destroying agricultural crops and forest, emitting large amounts of CO and air pollutants, resulting in adverse health effects. In order to reduce fire, the Indonesian government has committed to restore 2.

The Australian 2019/2020 bushfires were unprecedented in their extent and intensity, causing a catastrophic loss of habitat, human and animal life across eastern-Australia. We use a regional air quality model to assess the impact of the bushfires on particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM) concentrations and the associated health impact from short-term population exposure to bushfire PM.

Food carbohydrates are macronutrients that are found in fruits, grains, vegetables, and milk products. These organic compounds are present in foods in the form of sugars, starches, and fibers and are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. These wide ranging macromolecules can be classified according to their chemical structure into three major groups: low molecular weight mono- and disaccharides, intermediate molecular weight oligosaccharides, and high molecular weight polysaccharides.

Purpose: Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is defined as breast cancer diagnosed during the gestational period (gp-PABC) or in the first postpartum year (pp-PABC). Despite its infrequent occurrence, the incidence of PABC appears to be rising due to the increasing propensity for women to delay childbirth. We have established the first retrospective registry study of PABC in Ireland to examine specific clinicopathological characteristics, treatments, and maternal and foetal outcomes.

Lan et al recently highlighted the under-representation of older adults in clinical trials of systemic therapies for atopic dermatitis (AD). Late-onset AD is increasingly recognized in older adults. Spontaneous remission is uncommon with this phenotype.
