Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in the German adult population, with a prevalence of 10%. This guideline, updated on the basis of current scientific evidence, contains recommendations for the management of CKD in general practice.

Methods: The updated guideline is based on a review and assessment of source guidelines and systematic reviews concerning individual questions.

Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG in people with cystic fibrosis.

Background: When the first known US case of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) was reported in early 2020, little was known about the impact of this novel virus on the cystic fibrosis community. As the majority of individuals with CF have chronic lung disease, this population was initially considered to be at high risk for severe disease as infection with a multitude of viruses has proven to cause pulmonary exacerbation. SARS-CoV-2 virus has proven challenging to study given the multiple disease manifestations, range of severity, and wave-like phenomenon that varies geographically.

Early Oligocene kelp holdfasts and stepwise evolution of the kelp ecosystem in the North Pacific.

Kelp forests are highly productive and economically important ecosystems worldwide, especially in the North Pacific Ocean. However, current hypotheses for their evolutionary origins are reliant on a scant fossil record. Here, we report fossil hapteral kelp holdfasts from western Washington State, USA, indicating that kelp has existed in the northeastern Pacific Ocean since the earliest Oligocene.

Effect evaluation of a tele-neurologic intervention in primary care in a rural area in Germany-the NeTKoH study protocol of a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial.

Background: Neurological disorders account for a large and increasing proportion of the global burden of disease. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the management of neurologic care, particularly in rural areas. The use of tele-neurology in primary care in rural areas is internationally considered to have the potential to increase access to health care services and improve the quality of care in these underserved areas.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition, especially in the elderly. In order to prevent progression and complications of the disease, guideline-adherent outpatient care of patients with CKD should be prioritized. Quality indicators (QIs) can be used to measure and evaluate the quality of ambulatory care for patients with CKD.

Rechargeable films for protection of dry foods: A sustainable method for covalent grafting of β-cyclodextrin-thymol complex on PET/viscose platform.

Rechargeable materials for the effective protection of dry food products were developed. β-cyclodextrin-thymol inclusion complex was covalently grafted on a solid platform of polyethylene terephthalate-viscose using either traditional cross-linker of epichlorohydrin, or natural cross-linker of citric acid. A correlation between the grafting method and physicochemical properties, loading capacity and release capabilities of the resulted materials was studied.

Coronary artery disease in patients with cystic fibrosis - A case series and review of the literature.

Progressive obstructive pulmonary disease is the primary life-shortening complication in people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF); improvement in life expectancy has led to increased prevalence of non-pulmonary complications. Patients with CF are considered to be at low risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). We report here a case series of six patients with CF with and without known cystic fibrosis related diabetes (CFRD) who had acute myocardial infarction (AMI) requiring coronary stent placement.

Concordance of Patient Expectations Regarding Guideline Recommendations for Management of Psychosocial Factors in Low Back Pain: A Cross-sectional Study.

Background: Guidelines for low back pain (LBP) management recommend addressing psychosocial risk factors such as stress and depression, which have been shown to play a prognostic role in nonspecific LBP. LBP management has been found to diverge from published recommendations. The reasons why remain unclear and may be related to patient views and expectations regarding the causes and treatment of LBP.

Measuring volatile emissions from moss gametophytes: A review of methodologies and new applications.

Mosses inhabit nearly all terrestrial ecosystems and engage in important interactions with nitrogen-fixing microbes, sperm-dispersing arthropods, and other plants. It is hypothesized that these interactions could be mediated by biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Moss BVOCs may play fundamental roles in influencing local ecologies, such as biosphere-atmosphere-hydrosphere communications, physiological and evolutionary dynamics, plant-microbe interactions, and gametophyte stress physiology.

Air-ozonolysis activation of polyolefins versus use of laden finishing to form contact-active nonwoven materials.

Two synthetic approaches were explored for modification of the polyolefins polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) to form contact-active nonwoven materials. In the first approach, polymer surfaces were activated by O-free air-ozonolysis, and then the active agent (trimethoxysilyl) propyl-octadecyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride (C18-TSA) was covalently bound. In the second approach, the active agent was directly conjugated to the commercial 'finishing' that was then applied to the polymer.

We investigated the extent to which patient expectations correspond to recommendations of the German national guideline for management of low back pain (G-LBP) and whether patient characteristics, history of LBP and previous treatment experience are associated with expectations.

Cerumen Impaction Removal in General Practices: A Comparison of Approved Standard Products.

Background: Ear irrigation is a commonly used method for removing earwax in general practice. There is no firm evidence if no pre-treatment is as good as pre-treatment with various standard preparations.

Aim: To assess the effectiveness of no pre-treatment compared to pre-treatment with commercially available cerumenolytics and to assess which preparation is best suited for pre-treatment.

Little is known about guideline implementation in clinical practice and the prevalence of diagnostic procedures in ambulatory care. Evaluation of an ambulatory geriatric rehabilitation program - results of a matched cohort study based on claims data.

Background: Ambulatory geriatric rehabilitation (AGR) is a multidisciplinary outpatient prevention program designed to decrease hospitalisation and dependence on nursing care in multimorbid patients ≥70 years of age. We evaluated the effectiveness of AGR compared to usual care on progression of nursing care levels, nursing home admissions, hospital admissions, incident fractures, mortality rate and total cost of care during a one-year follow-up period.

Methods: Analyses were based on claims data from the health insurance company AOK Nordost.

Organ Transplantation for Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) remains the most common indication for lung transplantation in children and the third most common in adults and has the highest median survival posttransplant for all pretransplant diagnoses. Criteria for transplant in patients with CF vary widely among transplant centers and early referral to multiple centers may be needed to maximize opportunities for lung transplantation. Comorbidities unique to CF such as resistant and atypical pathogens like and , and cirrhosis require special consideration for lung transplantation but should not be considered as absolute contraindications.

Resource partitioning among brachiopods and bivalves at ancient hydrocarbon seeps: A hypothesis.

Brachiopods were thought to have dominated deep-sea hydrothermal vents and hydrocarbon seeps for most of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic, and were believed to have been outcompeted and replaced by chemosymbiotic bivalves during the Late Cretaceous. But recent findings of bivalve-rich seep deposits of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age have questioned this paradigm. By tabulating the generic diversity of the dominant brachiopod and bivalve clades-dimerelloid brachiopods and chemosymbiotic bivalves-from hydrocarbon seeps through the Phanerozoic, we show that their evolutionary trajectories are largely unrelated to one another, indicating that they have not been competing for the same resources.

[Effect of ambulatory geriatric rehabilitation on polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medication-an observational study].

Background: Ambulatory geriatric rehabilitation (AGR) is a prevention program for multimorbid patients with the contractual agreement to prevent the need for care and hospital admissions and to promote self-sufficiency. It provides an opportunity to reduce the prevalence of polypharmacy and to discontinue potentially inadequate medication (PIM).

Aim: The study investigated the effect of AGR on the number of drugs and PIM.

[Prevalence of thyroid abnormality: a comparison of ambulatory claims data with data from a population-based study].

Background: Billing diagnoses are used for quality assurance, estimates of prevalence and resource allocation. Validity studies showed relevant limitations. In Germany, there are no population-based data on the agreement of outpatient billing diagnoses with clinical data of thyroid disorders.
