The impact of infectious diseases on host populations is often not quantified because it is difficult to observe the host population and infectious disease dynamics. To address this problem, we developed a state-space model to simultaneously estimate host population and disease dynamics using wildlife rescue data. Using this model, we aimed to quantify the impact of sarcoptic mange on a Japanese raccoon dog population by estimating the change in their relative population size.

Increasingly, sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which have a protective effect on pancreatic β-cells, are being prescribed to treat diabetes; however, the underlying mechanism is not well understood. We previously administered SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin to a mouse model of type 2 diabetes and found significant changes in gene expression in the early-treated group, which led us to hypothesize that epigenetic regulation was a possible mechanism of these changes.

Immediate cooling is imperative to prevent irreversible cellular damage and improve patient outcomes. Here, we report two cases of heat stroke that highlight the use of a novel cooling suit (CarbonCool®) as a rapid cooling intervention administered in the prehospital setting, primarily focusing on patients with classic heat stroke.

Thus, the association between fall-related serious injury and activity during falls in acute care hospital remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the relationship between serious injury caused by fall and activity at the time of the fall in an acute care hospital.

Raccoon dogs can be a reservoir of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance, mainly extended-spectrum cephalosporins resistance, in isolates from faeces of 80 Japanese raccoon dogs in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

However, only a few reports in Japan have addressed this issue to date. In this study, we sought to clarify whether infection with SARS-CoV-2 affected thyroid hormone levels and whether these hormones could be better predictors of prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the Japan Trauma Data Bank for 2004-2018.
Background: Neuromyelitis optica is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system and is characterized by severe optic neuritis and transverse myelitis.
Case Presentation: The patient was a 74-year-old man with pneumonia. On admission, he exhibited lower limb weakness and rapid respiratory deterioration in the form of tachypnea.
Scabies is a highly contagious skin disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei that affects many mammals. However, the sensitivity of traditional tests for scabies diagnosis in humans is less than 50%. To simplify the diagnosis of scabies, methods that are simple, sensitive, specific, and cost-effective are required.

It is important to increase the number of tortoises in the wild and captivity; however, breeding in captivity, especially outside of the natural habitat area, has been unsuccessful worldwide. As a result of an emergency rescue due to a violation of the Act of Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, Nogeyama Zoological Gardens (Yokohama, Japan) has housed ploughshare tortoises, and a natural breeding trial started in 2011.

These tumors can behave as malignant neoplasms clinically and pathologically and can metastasize occasionally. No cases of MLTB in rodents have been reported, to our knowledge.

The intellectual capacity of elephants makes them capable of understanding circumstantial changes and associated emotions, allowing them to react accordingly. Physiological markers, such as heart rate variability, may be effective in determining an elephant's emotional state.

While one involves restrictions among different host taxa, the other is associated with predator-prey interactions between different host taxa. In contrast to these observations, the present study reports a possible irregular case of transmission of S.

Such conditions may have indirect life-threatening effects. Mohs' paste (zinc chloride based escharotic agent) was used to treat a female Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) aged 39 years with foot disorder at Kanazawa Zoological Gardens.

Image analysis techniques have recently become popular and may be useful for evaluating the giraffe's somatotype. The present study aimed to evaluate the giraffe somatotype using a three-dimensional laser measurement device, and to examine the usefulness of this method.

The aim of the current study was to investigate long-term outcomes of these patients and identify factors related to mortality.
Materials And Methods: Patients who were evacuated from hospitals near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to the Aizu Chuo Hospital from 15 to 26 March, 2011 were included in this study.
Eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) younger than 19 months at Kanazawa Zoological Gardens, Japan, frequently died of enteritis. The main cause of death was coccidiosis. This study aimed to reveal retrospectively the clinical features of enteritis and factors contributing to its high occurrence.

Few dental images of the eastern grey kangaroo have been published. In the present study, radiographic imagings of 29 kangaroos, ranging in age from 12 months to 10 years 9 months, was used to surveil the replacement of premolars and the eruption of molars.

However, supplemental feeding is beneficial in improving juvenile nutrition using less formula than required for hand-rearing, and allowing maternal bonding to continue through suckling. In this study, two neonatal koalas, delivered by the same mother in 2 years, exhibited insufficient growth post-emergence from the pouch; supplemental feeding was therefore initiated.

In both cases, hematological and serum biochemical examinations revealed high alkaline phosphatase levels, moderately high aspartate aminotransferase levels and white blood cell counts approximately within the normal range. Despite being treated, the tortoises died 9 and 43 days after the first clinical examination.
