BACKGROUND: Various factors, such as the optimal number of passes, aspiration pressure, and the use of 19-gauge and Trucut biopsy needles, have been studied to improve the diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). We retrospectively compared the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA between 25- and 22-gauge needles, which have been widely used recently. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group comprised 47 consecutive patients who underwent EUS-FNA with both 22- and 25-gauge needles from October 2007 through March 2010.

Background And Study Aims: Recent progress in chemotherapy has prolonged the survival of patients with malignant biliary strictures, leading to increased rates of stent occlusion. Occlusion of covered metallic stents now occurs in about half of all patients with malignant biliary strictures. The removal of metallic stents followed by placement of a second stent has been attempted, but outcomes remain controversial.

Epithelioid angiomyolipomas (perivascular epithelioid cell tumors) of the kidney are defined as potentially malignant mesenchymal lesions that are closely related to classic angiomyolipoma. Although approximately 120 cases are published, mostly as case reports with variably used diagnostic criteria, the pathologic prognostic predictors of outcome are unknown. We analyzed the clinicopathologic parameters in a large series of 41 cases of pure epithelioid angiomyolipomas of the kidney, which we designate as pure (monotypic) epithelioid PEComas to contrast them from classic angiomyolipomas that are regarded by some as PEComas.

Experimental NMR measurements for (13)C chemical shifts of propane molecules encaged in 16-hedral cages of structure II clathrate hydrate were conducted to investigate the effects of guest-host interaction of pure propane clathrate on the (13)C chemical shifts of propane guests. Experimental (13)C NMR measurements revealed that the clathrate hydration of propane reverses the (13)C chemical shifts of methyl and methylene carbons in propane guests to gaseous propane at room temperature and atmospheric pressure or isolated propane, suggesting a change in magnetic environment around the propane guest by the clathrate hydration. Inversion of the (13)C chemical shifts of propane clathrate suggests that the deshielding effect of the water cage on the methyl carbons of the propane molecule encaged in the 16-hedral cage is greater than that on its methylene carbon.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs induce small intestinal ulcers but the preventive measures against it remain unknown. So we evaluated the effect of geranylgeranylacetone (GGA), a mucosal protectant, on both the mucus content and loxoprofen sodium-induced lesions in the rat small intestine. Normal male Wistar rats were given GGA (200 or 400mg/kg p.

Associations between bladder cancer risk and NAT2 and GSTM1 polymorphisms have emerged as some of the most consistent findings in the genetic epidemiology of common metabolic polymorphisms and cancer, but their interaction with tobacco use, intensity and duration remain unclear. In a New England population-based case-control study of urothelial carcinoma, we collected mouthwash samples from 1088 of 1171 cases (92.9%) and 1282 of 1418 controls (91.

Objective: Hereditary dentin defects can be grouped into three types of dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI) and two types of dentin dysplasia. Tooth enamel is considered normal in patients with hereditary dentin defects, but is easily worn down and fractured due to DSPP mutation-induced altered dentin properties. The purposes of this study were to identify genetic cause of a family with type II DGI and enamel defects.

Objective: Submucosal tumors (SMTs) are occasionally found in the esophagus during upper endoscopy. Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are reported to be the second most common esophageal mesenchymal tumors, after leiomyomas. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is an effective tool for predicting the histologic characteristics of SMTs by providing an accurate image of the layering structure of the esophagus, but it is hard to differentiate GCTs from submucosal leiomyomas accurately with conventional EUS.

Dissociation behavior of methane-ethane mixed gas hydrate coexisting structures I and II at constant temperatures less than 223 K was studied with use of powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state (13)C NMR techniques. The diffraction patterns at temperatures less than 203 K showed both structures I and II simultaneously convert to Ih during the dissociation, but the diffraction pattern at temperatures greater than 208 K showed different dissociation behavior between structures I and II. Although the diffraction peaks from structure II decreased during measurement at constant temperatures greater than 208 K, those from structure I increased at the initial step of dissociation and then disappeared.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has widened its applications and been become an indispensable examination. Recent advances is as follows: Electronic radial scanning EUS, three-dimensional EUS (3D-EUS), enhancement, elastography, and EUS-FNA. Because of electronic radial scanning EUS, we can employ Doppler function.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicines are frequently prescribed in pharmacotherapy in Japan. In the present study, we evaluated the possible interaction of several herbal extracts including Rhei Rhizoma extract with cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A and efflux transporters such as P-glycoprotein and multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) 2. Rhei Rhizoma extract (100 microg/ml) significantly suppressed the CYP3A-mediated 6beta-hydroxylation of testosterone in hepatic microsomes, and increased the extent of bioavailability of midazolam, a typical CYP3A substrate, in rats.

Proteins have been considered to consist exclusively of L-amino acids in living tissues. However, our previous studies showed that two specific aspartyl (Asp) residues in αA- and αB-crystallins from human eye lenses invert to the D-isomers to a high degree during aging. The reaction is also accompanied by isomerization into a form containing β-Asp (isoaspartate) residues.

Background And Aims: The location of mucosal damage and changes in mucin content in the rat small intestine following administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have not been well elucidated.

Methods: After subcutaneous administration of loxoprofen sodium (10-40 mg/kg), the small intestinal mucosa of male Wistar rats was evaluated macroscopically, histologically, and immunohistochemically by measuring the total mucin content and immunoreactivity for anti-mucin monoclonal antibody, HCM31, 1, 3, 7, and 14 days later. Changes in the number of enterobacteria invading the mucosa around the lesions were also determined.
