Distillery wastewater from awamori making was anaerobically treated for one year using thermophilic upflow anaerobic filter (UAF) reactors packed with pyridinium group-containing nonwoven fabric material. The microbial structure and spatial distribution of microorganisms on the support material were characterized using molecular biological methods. The reactor steadily achieved a high TOC loading rate of 18 g/l/d with approximately 80% TOC removal efficiency when non-diluted wastewater was fed.

Non-purified rat peritoneal mast cells (NPMC) and rat basophilic leukemia (RBL-2H3) cells were sensitized with anti-dinitrophenol (DNP) monoclonal IgE antibody, and then stimulated with DNP-conjugated bovine serum albumin (DNP-BSA) and several chlorinated organic solvents. Trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) enhanced histamine release from antigen-stimulated NPMC and RBL-2H3 in a dose-dependent manner.

A Gram-negative, motile, non-spore-forming and moderately halophilic ellipsoid-shaped marine coccobacillus, designated strain SS011B1-4(T), was isolated from benthic sediment of the South China Sea. Optimum growth occurred at 30-37 degrees C, pH 7.5-8.

Tryptophol is a natural component isolated from vinegar produced from the boiled extract of black soybean. We have reported that tryptophol induces apoptosis in U937 cells via activation of caspase-8 followed by caspase-3. Tryptophol, however, did not affect human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL).

This case involved a 38-year-old man who was referred to our hospital with general fatigue, appetite loss, weight loss, cough and exertional dyspnea. Within a couple of days, he was admitted due to advanced dyspnea and general fatigue. Severe hypoxemia was identified and acute right heart failure developed on admission.

He mainly complained fever and anorexia. Since blood culture examination revealed Listeria monocytogenes and echocardiography exhibited vegetation at the mitral leaflet, the patient was diagnosed as infective endocarditis.

This study evaluated gender differences in dyspnoea and HRQoL in patients with COPD.
Methods: Study participants were 156 patients with COPD (men 117, women 39); men were individually matched to women by age and FEV(1)% predicted to give a ratio of 3:1 (male : female).
The aims of this study were 1) to determine whether dairy cows can be induced to ovulate by the treatment with gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) followed by prostaglandin F(2 alpha) (PGF(2 alpha)) during the early postpartum period and 2) to describe their ovarian and hormonal responses according to ovarian status. Cows were divided in two groups and received 10 microg of buserelin followed by 500 microg of cloprostenol 7 days apart starting from 21 (GnRH21, n=7) or around 37 days postpartum (GnRH37, n=7). The groups were further classified according to presence (-CL) or absence (-NCL) of functional corpora lutea (CL) on the day of GnRH treatment (d 0): GnRH21-NCL (n=4), GnRH21-CL (n=3) and GnRH37-CL (n=7).

Cows in the PGF group (n=18) received a PGF(2 alpha) analogue when a CL was first palpated per rectum at 10-d intervals after 1 to 2 month postpartum. Cows (n=11), which showed estrus (Day 0) within 5 d of the PGF(2 alpha), and had a CL on Day 7, received ET.

Lactation records from 46 lactating Holstein cows between calving and 305 d postpartum were studied. Milk samples were collected twice weekly between d 7 and 100 for later determination of progesterone concentrations.

The method is being used in studies; however, the effects of polluted air on eNO values are poorly understood. If polluted air significantly affects eNO concentrations, then it would be hard to evaluate the concentration of eNO, particularly in epidemiological measurements to detect the effects of airway inflammation, such as that in bronchial asthma.

The first step in this process was a draw-and-fill process for thermophilic anaerobic digestion. After fourfold dilution with tap water, continuous feeding was performed for the aerobic treatment of the effluent from the anaerobic treatment.

Compound-6 purified from an ethyl acetate extract of black soybean vinegar using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) induced fragmentation of DNA and the development of apoptotic bodies (characteristic physiological features of apoptosis) in U937 cells. By analysis of chemical structure, this active compound was identified as tryptophol.

The critical dilution rate of the chemostat, in which most of the introduced LCFA were decomposed and mineralized, was 0.4 d(-1).

Clinically, patients with greater reversibility have higher fluctuations in respiratory symptoms, and hence may have a reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). On the other hand, they may have a better HRQoL as medications may be more effective in this population.

The aim of the present study was to determine in detail the changing profiles of metabolic and reproductive hormones in relation to ovulation of the dominant follicle (DF) of the first follicular wave post-partum in high-producing dairy cows. Plasma concentrations of related hormones in 22 multiparous Holstein cows were measured from 4 weeks pre-partum to 3 weeks post-partum, and the development of DF was observed with colour Doppler ultrasound.

Acute exacerbation of COPD (AE-COPD) is a major problem influencing patient outcome, increasing both economic burden and mortality. We investigated: 1) the direct medical cost for inpatients with AE-COPD, and 2) factors that contribute to the higher cost of AE-COPD. A total of 131 episodes in 99 patients (mean age: 77.

In time-constrained clinical situations, a pre-interview questionnaire can be a useful method for alerting both clinicians and patients with COPD, particularly for elderly patients. To screen subjects who might have COPD, we have developed an efficient pre-interview questionnaire.
