Background and aim Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is more common in people with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than in people without diabetes mellitus (non-DM). This disease can lead to cirrhosis or hepatic cancer. There is limited data on NAFLD prevalence and the level of risk of fibrosis in Bangladeshi individuals.

The impact of income on health expenditure has been studied extensively using national-level data; however, studies estimating the household-level income elasticity of health expenditure, particularly by provider types, remain limited. Analysing nationally representative household survey data, we examine outpatient and inpatient out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses across healthcare providers and by various income levels. We employed the Heckman two-step model and OLS regression to estimate income elasticity separately for outpatient and inpatient services.

Aims: Increased oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus may lead to splenic damage, contributing to decreased immunity. This study aims to evaluate the potential of vitamin E supplements as a protective agent against spleen injury by examining physiological, hematological, biochemical, and histological changes in diabetic rat model.

Methods: Diabetes was induced in male wistar albino rats through an intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg Streptozotocin, and the rats were randomly divided into five groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how bisphenol A (BPA), a common plastic chemical, impacts the formation and health of primordial follicles in the ovary, which are key for female reproduction.
  • It highlights the crucial role of the Notch signaling pathway in the communication between oocytes and pregranulosa cells for Folliculogenesis, which BPA might disrupt.
  • The research findings reveal that BPA exposure affects the number of ovarian follicles, levels of cell death (apoptosis), and the expression of Notch2 and Jagged2 proteins, with effects varying based on the dosage and timing of exposure.

Background and aim Antenatal care (ANC) is universally acknowledged as an essential intervention for enhancing the well-being of both mothers and children. The World Health Organization advises a minimum of four ANC visits. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of adequate ANC in mitigating adverse perinatal outcomes.

Studies are being carried out on achieving the maximum quality of garlic through various approaches. In Bangladesh, new garlic varieties (BARI 1-4, BAU-1, BAU-2, BAU-5) have been recently developed by artificial selection to enhance their quality. The present study aimed to evaluate their potency in terms of bioactive properties and organosulfur compounds content using different bioassay and GC-MS techniques while comparing them with other accessible varieties (Chinese, Indian, Local).

Article Synopsis
  • Bone marrow derived stem cells (BMSC) are the leading choice in bone regeneration, but researchers are exploring other sources like bovine BMSC and adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells (ATSC).
  • The study used immunofluorescence and PCR to analyze the osteogenic differentiation of BMSC and ATSC by measuring alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels and calcium deposition over 21 days.
  • Results showed that ATSC exhibited higher ALP levels and calcium deposition initially, indicating faster differentiation, while BMSC ultimately produced more calcium over time, suggesting better long-term mineralization.

Introduction: Lipoma in the thoracic cavity is very rare, unlike any subcutaneous lipoma, and can often grow very large without showing any symptoms.

Case: We report a 42-year-old man having giant intrathoracic lipoma which was found incidentally during routine checkup and the first documented case of the such type in Bangladesh. This benign tumor occupied almost the entire left hemithorax, and it was resected successfully by thoracotomy.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are interested in bovine amniotic fluid-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BAF-MSCs) for stem cell therapy because they are easy to collect and have fewer ethical concerns compared to human cells.
  • The study involved isolating and analyzing BAF-MSCs from cattle samples, assessing their properties through various tests to understand their growth patterns and differentiation capabilities.
  • Results indicated that BAF-MSCs show potential neurogenic properties, evidenced by changes in specific marker expressions and the ability to form neurospheres, suggesting their future application in clinical settings, although further research is needed to clarify their neurogenic pathways.

Zoonotic diseases require a One Health approach for successful control and elimination due to the nature of their transmission between animals and humans. One Health recognises that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are all interconnected. Ethiopia has committed itself to controlling five prioritised zoonotic diseases (rabies, anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis and echinococcosis), using a One Health approach.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Women with a history of obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) are at increased risk of recurrence (rOASI) at subsequent delivery; however, evidence regarding the factors influencing this risk is limited. Furthermore, little is known about what factors influence the decision to alternatively deliver by elective caesarean section (ELLSCS).

Methods: Retrospective univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis of prospectively collected data from four NHS electronic maternity databases including primiparous women sustaining OASIS during a singleton, term, cephalic, vaginal delivery between 2004 and 2015, who had a subsequent delivery.

Persuaded by the necessity of finding new sources of antibiotics, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized by adopting a newly developed green synthesis technique and subsequently, their antibacterial activity against different pathogenic bacteria was evaluated. We have successfully synthesized bio-molecule capped ferromagnetic Ag NPs with an average crystallite size of 13 nm using AgNO solution as a precursor and leaf extract as a reducing and capping agent. The characterization of the synthesized Ag NPs was carried out using various techniques such as UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetry (TG), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses.

Skin injuries were assessed in 560 imported and local cattle and water buffaloes at two livestock markets in Bangladesh. The body of each animal was divided into 11 anatomical regions, and abrasions, lacerations, penetrations, ulcerations, bleeding, swelling, hyperkeratosis and scars were recorded for each region. Among the 560 animals studied, 501 were found to have at least one injury.
