Baclofen has a risk of encephalopathy in older adults receiving dialysis.

At least 23 case reports link the muscle relaxant baclofen to encephalopathy in patients receiving dialysis. To explore this issue, we conducted a study to quantify the risk of encephalopathy from baclofen in patients receiving dialysis. Linked healthcare databases were used to conduct a population-based cohort study of older adults receiving maintenance dialysis in Ontario, Canada (1997-2018) to compare new users of baclofen to non-users.

Association of Baclofen With Encephalopathy in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease.

Importance: At least 30 case reports have linked the muscle relaxant baclofen to encephalopathy in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Objective: To compare the 30-day risk of encephalopathy in patients with CKD and newly prescribed baclofen at greater than or equal to 20 mg per day vs less than 20 mg per day. The secondary objective was to compare the risk of encephalopathy in baclofen users vs nonusers.
