A longevity factor α-Klotho has been shown to be neuroprotective and enhance brain function. However, it has not been elucidated whether α-Klotho is involved in the embryonic brain development. To address this, we investigated whether α-Klotho regulates embryonic neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation.

Musth cases in two captive male Asian elephants () in Korea.

Importance: When male elephants reach sexual maturity, they exhibit excessive sexual behaviors called musths. The musth period is important in the management of elephant herds. However, the timing of the musth and the effect of musth elephants on non-musth elephants in Korea have not been clearly analyzed.

Long-Term Outcomes of Neoadjuvant Therapy Versus Upfront Surgery for Resectable Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma.

Introduction: This study aimed to compare the long-term effects of neoadjuvant therapy and upfront surgery on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 202 patients, including 167 who had upfront surgery and 35 who received neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery. Surgical outcomes and survival rates were compared using propensity score matching to minimize selection bias.

Previously, we demonstrated that auditory fear conditioning produces presynaptic potentiation at lateral to basal amygdala (LA-BA) synapses, which occludes high-frequency stimulation (HFS)-induced ex-vivo LTP. We also found that the HFS-induced ex-vivo LTP requires presynaptic hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channel activity. In this study, we investigated whether HCN channels are necessary for auditory fear conditioning in vivo.

Survival predictors in patients with pancreatic cancer on liposomal irinotecan plus fluorouracil/leucovorin: a multicenter observational study.

Background: Approximately half of the patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) receive subsequent lines of chemotherapy. Recently, the liposomal irinotecan (nal-IRI) plus 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/LV) regimen is recommended as subsequent lines of chemotherapy. However, little is known about the predictive factors for the nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV regimen, especially in patients with previous irinotecan (IRI) exposure.

Involvement of posterior hypothalamic CaMKII-positive neurons in ADHD-like behaviors in mice.

This study explores the behavioral effects of modulating CaMKII-positive (CaMKII+) neurons in the posterior hypothalamus (PH). Utilizing a chemogenetic approach in mice, we discovered that the activation of CaMKII + neurons within the PH is associated with heightened locomotor activity, reduced social interaction, and impulsive behavior unrelated to anxiety or avoidance. These observed behaviors share a significant resemblance with characteristics commonly found in attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Potential Exosome Biomarkers for Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Given its prevalence, reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis are required. Exosomal proteins within extracellular nanovesicles are promising candidates for diagnostic, screening, prognostic, and disease monitoring purposes in neurological diseases such as PD.

The QPLEX™ Plus Assay Kit for the Early Clinical Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.

We recently developed a multiplex diagnostic kit, QPLEX™ Alz plus assay kit, which captures amyloid-β1-40, galectin-3 binding protein, angiotensin-converting enzyme, and periostin simultaneously using microliters of peripheral blood and utilizes an optimized algorithm for screening Alzheimer's disease (AD) by correlating with cerebral amyloid deposition. Owing to the demand for early AD detection, we investigate the potential of our kit for the early clinical diagnosis of AD. A total of 1395 participants were recruited, and their blood samples were analyzed with the QPLEX™ kit.

Clinical Outcomes in Dogs Undergoing Cholecystectomy via a Transverse Incision: A Meta-Analysis of 121 Animals Treated between 2011 and 2021.

Although many studies have been conducted on the use of median and transverse incisions in various surgeries in the field of human medicine, related studies in veterinary medicine are lacking. This study aimed to present treatment options for dogs requiring cholecystectomy by reporting the pros and cons of 121 cholecystectomies performed via transverse incision at our hospital over 10 years. In most included cases, nonelective cholecystectomy was performed in an unstable emergency situation.

Frequency, Characteristics, and Risk Factors for Falls at an Inpatient Cancer Rehabilitation Unit.

Purpose: Falls in the hospital can lead to adverse events, including injuries. Studies have shown that patients with cancer and those undergoing inpatient rehabilitation (IPR) are at higher risk for falls. Therefore, we measured the frequency, degree of harm, and characteristics of patients who fell in an inpatient cancer rehabilitation unit.

GFAP as a Potential Biomarker for Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Blood biomarkers have been considered tools for the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) and tau are primarily blood biomarkers, recent studies have identified other reliable candidates that can serve as measurable indicators of pathological conditions. One such candidate is the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), an astrocytic cytoskeletal protein that can be detected in blood samples.

Comparison of Functional Outcomes between Supervised Rehabilitation and Telerehabilitation in Female Patients with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common cause of anterior knee pain, and therapeutic exercises are recommended. During the COVID-19 pandemic, despite recommendations on the importance of telerehabilitation, insufficient studies have investigated functional outcomes between supervised rehabilitation and telerehabilitation in patients with PFPS. This study aimed to compare the muscle strength, muscle activation time, and patient-reported outcomes between supervised rehabilitation and telerehabilitation in female patients with PFPS.

Lower Extremity Muscle Performance and Foot Pressure in Patients Who Have Plantar Fasciitis with and without Flat Foot Posture.

Abnormal foot posture and poor muscle performance are potential causes of plantar fasciitis (PF). However, no study has compared the differences between lower extremity muscle performance and foot pressure in patients who have PF with and without abnormal foot postures. This study aimed to compare the differences in lower extremity muscle performance, such as in the hip, quadriceps, hamstring, and plantar flexor, and foot pressure in patients who have PF with and without flat foot postures.

Recently, we reported that auditory fear conditioning leads to the presynaptic potentiation at lateral amygdala to basal amygdala (LA-BA) synapses that shares the mechanism with high-frequency stimulation (HFS)-induced long-term potentiation (LTP) ex vivo. In the present study, we further examined the molecular mechanisms underlying the HFS-induced presynaptic LTP. We found that a presynaptic elevation of Ca was required for the LTP induction.

The naturalistic reinforcement of worry from positive and negative emotional contrasts: Results from a momentary assessment study within social interactions.

Background: The Contrast Avoidance Model (Newman & Llera, 2011) proposes that worry is reinforced by avoiding a negative contrast and increasing the likelihood of a positive contrast.

Objective: To determine if reinforcement of worry occurs naturalistically via contrasts in both negative and positive emotion.

Method: Using event-contingent momentary assessment we assessed social interactions, pre-interaction state worry and pre-post interaction positive and negative emotion.

Prospective comparative study between knee alignment-oriented static and dynamic balance exercise in patellofemoral pain syndrome patients with dynamic knee valgus.

Exercise therapy has been reported as an effective treatment method for patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). However, there is a lack of studies regarding the effectiveness of balance exercise in the treatment of patients with PFPS. This study aimed to prospectively compare changes in proprioception, neuromuscular control, knee muscle strength, and patient-reported outcomes between patients with PFPS treated with knee alignment-oriented static balance exercise (SBE) and dynamic balance exercise (DBE).
