The shape-dependent aero- and hydro-dynamics found in nature have been adopted in a wide range of areas spanning from daily transportation to forefront biomedical research. Here, we report DNA-linked nanoparticle films exhibiting shape-dependent magnetic locomotion, controlled by DNA sequences. Fabricated through a DNA-directed layer-by-layer assembly of iron oxide and gold nanoparticles, the multifunctional films exhibit rotational and translational motions under magnetic fields, along with reversible shape morphing via DNA strand exchange reactions.

The SARS-CoV-2 genome occupies a unique place in infection biology - it is the most highly sequenced genome on earth (making up over 20% of public sequencing datasets) with fine scale information on sampling date and geography, and has been subject to unprecedented intense analysis. As a result, these phylogenetic data are an incredibly valuable resource for science and public health. However, the vast majority of the data was sequenced by tiling amplicons across the full genome, with amplicon schemes that changed over the pandemic as mutations in the viral genome interacted with primer binding sites.

Introduction: To improve and maintain quality and safety in anesthesia, standards have been proposed regarding human resources, facilities and equipment, medications and intravenous fluids, monitoring, and the conduct of anesthesia. Compliance with these standards remains a challenge in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and results in high morbidity and mortality particularly in children. This aim of this study was to assess the progress made in improving the pediatric anesthesia infrastructures, human resources, education, medications, and equipment in French-speaking SSA over the past 10 years (2013-2022).

The coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui) was introduced to the island of Hawai'i in the 1980s, and has spread across much of the island. There is concern they will invade higher elevation areas where negative impacts on native species are expected. It is not known if coqui change behavior and baseline physiology in ways that allow them to invade higher elevations.

In artificial tactile sensing, to emulate the human sense of touch, independent perception of shear force and pressure is important. Decoupling the pressure and shear force is a challenging task for ensuring stable grasping manipulation for both soft and brittle objects. This study introduces a deformable ion gel-based tactile sensor that is capable of distinguishing pressure from shear force when pressurized shear force is applied in any direction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory treatments for different subphenotypes of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) using a sheep model that mimics human conditions.
  • Thirty anesthetized sheep were divided into two ARDS models and randomly assigned to receive either methylprednisolone, erythromycin, or no treatment.
  • Results indicated that methylprednisolone significantly improved oxygen levels and survival rates, especially in sheep resembling the hyperinflammatory ARDS subphenotype, while erythromycin showed no beneficial effects.

The coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui) was introduced to the island of Hawai'i in the 1980s and has spread across much of the island. Concern remains that this frog will continue to expand its range and invade higher elevation habitats where much of the island's endemic species are found. We determined whether coqui thermal tolerance and physiology change along Hawai'i's elevational gradients.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a traditional dry period (60 d) versus a no dry period (0 d) on the milk production, physiological response, and metabolic status of dairy cows exposed to heat stress during the transition period. Holstein dairy cows (n = 15) with similar expected calving dates were randomly assigned to two different dry period lengths: (1) no dry period (n = 7) and (2) a traditional dry period of 60 days (n = 8). All cows were studied from 8 weeks before expected calving to 10 weeks after calving and experienced heat stress during the transition period.

Changes in the physiological health of species are an essential indicator of changing conditions and environmental challenges. Reponses to environmental challenges can often induce stress, influence physiology, and change metabolism in organisms. Here we tested blood chemistry parameters indicative of stress and metabolic activity using an i-STAT point-of-care blood analyzer in seven populations of free-ranging rock iguanas exposed to varying levels of tourism and supplemental feeding.

In this study, culture fluid (SCCF) has been added to a diet of lactating dairy cows to attempt to improve the ruminal fermentation and potentially increase the dry matter intake (DMI) and milk yield. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of SCCF on the milk yield and blood biochemistry in lactating cows during the summer. Twenty-four Holstein dairy cows were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: (1) total mixed ration (TMR-1) (Control); (2) TMR-1 supplemented with SCCF (T1); (3) TMR-2 (containing alfalfa hay) (T2); and (4) TMR-2 supplemented with SCCF (T3).

Despite decades of technological advancements in blood-contacting medical devices, complications related to shear flow-induced blood trauma are still frequently observed in clinic. Blood trauma includes haemolysis, platelet activation, and degradation of High Molecular Weight von Willebrand Factor (HMW vWF) multimers, all of which are dependent on the exposure time and magnitude of shear stress. Specifically, accumulating evidence supports that when blood is exposed to shear stresses above a certain threshold, blood trauma ensues; however, it remains unclear how various constituents of blood are affected by discrete shears experimentally.

The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) describes a heterogenous population of patients with acute severe respiratory failure. However, contemporary advances have begun to identify distinct sub-phenotypes that exist within its broader envelope. These sub-phenotypes have varied outcomes and respond differently to several previously studied interventions.

The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) has caused innumerable deaths worldwide since its initial description over five decades ago. Population-based estimates of ARDS vary from 1 to 86 cases per 100,000, with the highest rates reported in Australia and the United States. This syndrome is characterised by a breakdown of the pulmonary alveolo-epithelial barrier with subsequent severe hypoxaemia and disturbances in pulmonary mechanics.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used in critical care to manage patients with severe respiratory and cardiac failure. ECMO brings blood from a critically ill patient into contact with a non-endothelialized circuit which can cause clotting and bleeding simultaneously in this population. Continuous systemic anticoagulation is needed during ECMO.

The development of adult use right ventricular assist devices (RVADs) and pediatric left ventricular assist devices (pediatric LVADs) have significantly lagged behind compared to adult use left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The HeartWare ventricular assist device (HVAD) intended to be used for adult's systemic support, is increasingly used off-label for adult pulmonary and pediatric systemic support. Due to different hemodynamics and physiology, however, the HVAD's hemocompatibility profiles can be drastically different when used in adult pulmonary circulation or in children, compared to its intended usage state, which could have a direct clinical and developmental relevance.

A plethora of leukocyte modulations have been reported in critically ill patients. Critical illnesses such as acute respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic shock, which potentially require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, are associated with changes in leukocyte numbers, phenotype, and functions. The changes observed in these illnesses could be compounded by exposure of blood to the non-endothelialized surfaces and non-physiological conditions of ECMO.
