Associated impairments among children with cerebral palsy: findings from a cross-sectional hospital-based study in Vietnam.

Objective: This study aims to explore the associated impairments of cerebral palsy (CP) and their correlates among children with CP in Vietnam.

Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study using hospital-based surveillance.

Setting: National Children's Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam between June and November 2017.

2-year survival estimation for decompensated cirrhosis patients of prognostic scoring systems.

Objective: Prognostic models proposed for cirrhotic patients' survival have not been satisfactorily investigated in the Vietnam population, especially in the medium-term period.

Patients And Methods: In this prospective study, we enrolled a total of 904 patients admitted to Hepato-Gastroenterology Center, Bach Mai Hospital from December 2019 to November 2021 and calculated their CP, MELD, MELD-Na score, IMELD, Refit MELD, and Refit MELD-Na after 2-year follow-up to compare their survival prognosis.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 53.

Health financing policies during the COVID-19 pandemic and implications for universal health care: a case study of 15 countries.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic was a health emergency requiring rapid fiscal resource mobilisation to support national responses. The use of effective health financing mechanisms and policies, or lack thereof, affected the impact of the pandemic on the population, particularly vulnerable groups and individuals. We provide an overview and illustrative examples of health financing policies adopted in 15 countries during the pandemic, develop a framework for resilient health financing, and use this pandemic to argue a case to move towards universal health coverage (UHC).

The Effect of Third Dose of Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines on IgG Antibody Titers.

With the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) authorized the third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) vaccine with the rationale for prolonged elevation of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody titers and protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. To better understand how administration of the third dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine affects the incidence and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections, we administered the third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) to 189 participants. Blood samples were collected from participants during each of their scheduled visits (baseline, week two, week 12, and week 24) and tested for semi-quantitative anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers.

Accuracy and Inter-observer Agreement Among Endoscopists for Visual Identification of Colorectal Polyps Using Endoscopy Images.

Background: It is essential to accurately distinguish small benign hyperplastic colon polyps (HP) from sessile serrated lesions (SSL) or adenomatous polyps (TA) based on endoscopic appearances. Our objective was to determine the accuracy and inter-observer agreements for the endoscopic diagnosis of small polyps.

Methods: High-quality endoscopic images of 30 small HPs, SSLs, and TAs were used randomly to create two-timed PowerPoint slide sets-one with and another one without information on polyp size and location.

Trauma Care Training in Vietnam: Narrative Scoping Review.

Background: The model of trauma in Vietnam has changed significantly over the last decade and requires reforming medical education to deal with new circumstances. Our aim is to evaluate this transition regarding the new target by analyzing trauma and the medical training system as a whole.

Objective: This study aimed to establish if medical training in the developing country of Vietnam has adapted to the new disease pattern of road trauma emerging in its economy.

Influence of father-infant relationship on infant development: A father-involvement intervention in Vietnam.

We examined the extent to which fathers can be taught and encouraged to develop positive relationships with their children, especially in infancy, and the effects of this fathering intervention on infant development. A multifaceted relationally focused intervention was used to assist fathers in Vietnam to engage in responsive direct and indirect involvement with their infants and work together with the mother as part of a parenting team. Fathers and mothers from 13 communes in a rural and semiurban district were recruited to the intervention group.

Differential modulation of FXR activity by chlorophacinone and ivermectin analogs.

Chemicals that alter normal function of farnesoid X receptor (FXR) have been shown to affect the homeostasis of bile acids, glucose, and lipids. Several structural classes of environmental chemicals and drugs that modulated FXR transactivation were previously identified by quantitative high-throughput screening (qHTS) of the Tox21 10K chemical collection. In the present study, we validated the FXR antagonist activity of selected structural classes, including avermectin anthelmintics, dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, 1,3-indandione rodenticides, and pyrethroid pesticides, using in vitro assay and quantitative structural-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis approaches.

Using β-Lactamase and NanoLuc Luciferase Reporter Gene Assays to Identify Inhibitors of the HIF-1 Signaling Pathway.

The hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a transcriptional factor involved in the regulation of oxygen within cellular environments. In hypoxic tissues or those with inadequate oxygen concentrations, activation of the HIF-1 transcription factor allows for subsequent activation of target gene expression implicated in cell survival. As a result, cells proliferate through formation of new blood vessels and expansion of vascular systems, providing necessary nourishment needed of cells.

Identification of approved and investigational drugs that inhibit hypoxia-inducible factor-1 signaling.

One of the requirements for tumor development is blood supply, most often driven by hypoxia-induced angiogenesis. Hypoxia induces the stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), which induces expression of an angiogenic factor, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The purpose of this study is to validate a new screening platform combined with orthogonal assays to rapidly identify HIF-1 inhibitors and to evaluate the effectiveness of approved drugs on modulating HIF-1 signaling.

Identification of HDAC Inhibitors Using a Cell-Based HDAC I/II Assay.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a class of epigenetic enzymes that regulate gene expression by histone deacetylation. Altered HDAC function has been linked to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, making HDACs popular therapeutic targets. In this study, we describe a screening approach for identification of compounds that inhibit endogenous class I and II HDACs.

Primary bone lymphoma in a 10-year-old boy.

Primary bone lymphoma has been defined as a solitary lesion in bone, without concomitant involvement of the extra osseous hematopoietic system, with no evidence of extra osseous disease within 6 months of the onset of symptoms. The vast majority of cases are of the large B-cell non-Hodgkin type. They are rare bone tumor.

High accuracy mass spectrometry comparison of Conus bandanus and Conus marmoreus venoms from the South Central Coast of Vietnam.

Cone snail (genus Conus) venoms provide a rich source of small bioactive peptides known as conopeptides or conotoxins, which are highly interesting in pharmacological studies for new drug discovery. Conus species have evolved expressing a variety of conopeptides, adapted to the biological targets of their own specific preys at their living environments. Therefore, the potential proteomic evaluation of Conus venom components, poorly studied, is of great interest.

Context-induced relapse to alcohol seeking after punishment in a rat model.

Background: Rat studies have demonstrated that exposure to environments associated with alcohol intake reinstates alcohol seeking after extinction of alcohol-reinforced responding in a different context. However, extinction is limited as an abstinence model, because humans typically abstain because of negative consequences associated with excessive drinking. It is currently unknown whether alcohol-associated contexts can provoke relapse to alcohol seeking after alcohol-taking behavior is suppressed by adverse consequences in a different context.

Medial prefrontal cortex neuronal activation and synaptic alterations after stress-induced reinstatement of palatable food seeking: a study using c-fos-GFP transgenic female rats.

Relapse to maladaptive eating habits during dieting is often provoked by stress and there is evidence for a role of ovarian hormones in stress responses and feeding. We studied the role of these hormones in stress-induced reinstatement of food seeking and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) neuronal activation in c-fos-GFP transgenic female rats, which express GFP in strongly activated neurons. Food-restricted ovariectomized or sham-operated c-fos-GFP rats were trained to lever-press for palatable food pellets.

Retroperitoneal abscess from dropped appendicolith complicating laparoscopic appendectomy.

Abscesses can occur after appendectomy. With the increasing use of laparoscopy, this risk has increased in the same way as the incidence of abscesses related to dropped gallstones increased after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However, this occurrence has been rarely reported.

[Retrocaval ureter in a 10-year-old boy].

Retrocaval ureter is an uncommon abnormality of the inferior vena cava, which is rarely detected in the child due to its non-specific symptomatology. Despite a varying state of severity, chronic ureteral obstruction generally leads to the deterioration of renal function during adulthood. Treatment depends on the symptomatology in question, and surgical management should be as conservative as possible.

[Current emergency treatment of lesions of the flexor tendons: anatomical, biomechanical and cicatricial aspects].

Emergency treatment of flexor tendon lesion in 1988: anatomic biomechanical and healing characteristics. Flexor tendon surgery in 1988 must take into account detailed anatomic knowledge as well as healing and biomechanical properties of flexor tendons. Application of standardised surgical technics allows reliable treatment when the surgeon is familiar with these technics and the basic knowledge they suppose.

[Current treatment of fresh lesions of the flexor tendons].

Different aspects of primary treatment of flexor tendon lesions are reviewed. Of outstanding importance are: adequate setting and instruments plus meticulous repair with fine material, avoidance of traumatic manipulation of structures and anatomical repair, use of dynamic mobilisation of reconstructed tendons within a team of well informed and motivated therapists.

Intrinsic fasciotomy. When and why?

Major trauma to the upper extremity may lead to ischemic contracture of various muscle groups, sometimes including the intrinsic muscles of the hand. The clinical consequence of such necrotic fibrosis of the intrinsics is clawing of the digits with marked stiffness. After a short anatomical review of the fascias of the intrinsics, indications and operative techniques are discussed, in parallel with clinical cases.
