An in vivo study of a photoswitchable cytotoxic peptide LMB040 has been undertaken on a chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma model in immunocompetent rats. We analysed the pharmacokinetic profile of the less toxic photoform ("ring-closed" dithienylethene) of the compound in tumors, plasma, and healthy liver. Accordingly, the peptide can reach a tumor concentration sufficiently high to exert a cytotoxic effect upon photoconversion into the more active ("ring-open") photoform.

Irradiation with red or near-infrared (NIR) light in low level light therapy (LLLT) is found to stimulate cellular processes and bioenergetics, resulting in enhanced wound healing, pain control, neurodegenerative diseases treatment, etc. During light irradiation of tissues and organs, different cells are affected, though the connection between photostimulation of cells and their environmental conditions remains poorly understood. Background: One of the major factors restricting in vivo efficacy of dendritic cells (DCs) based immunotherapy is the inefficient migration of these cells to the lymphoid tissue, wherein DCs activate antigen-specific T cells. A fundamentally new approach for the possibility of enhancing the antitumor effects of DC-based immunotherapy may be the use of magnetically sensitive nanocomplexes to increase the target delivery of DCs to the lymph nodes of the recipient.

There is increasing evidence that stress during development can affect adult-life health status and longevity. In the present study, we examined life span (LS), fly weight, fecundity and expression levels of longevity-associated genes (Hsp70, InR, dSir2, dTOR and dFOXO) in adult Drosophila melanogaster flies reared in normal [low density (LD), ~ 300-400 eggs per jar] or crowded [high density (HD), more than 3000 eggs per jar] conditions by using the order (day) of emergence as an index of the developmental duration (HD1-5 groups). Developmental time showed a significant trend to increase while weight showed a significant trend to decrease with increasing the timing of emergence.

We investigated the effects of teichoic acid (TA) from Staphylococcus aureus Wood 46 on tumor growth and metastasis of the experimental Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) in mice. Intranasal administration of TA alone aggravated both tumor growth and metastasis, whereas combined administration of TA with a synthetic bimetallic (copper : cadmium) ethylene diamine complex PO244 resulted in pronounced antitumor and antimetastatic effects. The group of animals subjected to the combined treatment with TA and PO244 manifested the highest degree of lymphocyte infiltration into the tumor tissue, compared to the control group and those exposed to TA or PO244 alone.
