Attention is drawn to the fact that evacuation from the gastric stump is determined not only by the size of the anastomosis, the manner by which it is formed, whether transversely or longitudinally but also by the functional condition of the gastric stump and the efferent intestinal loop. Motor-evacuation disorders on the part of the stump and efferent intestinal loop precede the development of most postgastric resection syndromes. The authors examined 197 patients who underwent Hofmeister-Finsterer gastrectomy.

The authors describe a method of complex examination of patients with diseases of the external biliary tract with the aim of diagnosing cystic duct blocks. Intravenous cholangiography using billignost and albumin in 2:1 ratio proved highly effective. Of essential help in the diagnosis of cystic duct block was dynamic ultrasonic examination.

A complex examination of 286 patients was performed after gastric resection by the method of Hofmeister-Finsterer, 64 patients after truncal vagotomy with antrum-resection, 14--after selective proximal vagotomy with draining operations and 26--without draining operation. Time for the recovery of motor-evacuatory function of the stomach after organ-preserving operations was considerably shorter than after resection of the stomach. In order to shorten the period of adaptation of the digestion organs after operative treatment of ulcer disease a complex of rehabilitating measures is proposed including percutaneous electrostimulation, diet, balneological and medicamentous therapy.

The authors evaluated the results of gastric resection in the Hofmeister-Finsterer modification in 262 patients with ulcer disease. Treatment considered of drugs, balneotherapy and electric stimulation with consideration of the functional state of the resected stomach. The used rehabilitation complex allowed to improve the results of surgical treatment, to reduce time of temporary loss of working capacity by 2-3 weeks.

Altogether 253 patients operated on for peptic ulcer were examined for the action of 30 foods on motor and evacuatory function of the gastric stump and efferent intestinal loop. 213 patients were subjected to gastric resection after Hofmeister-Finsterer and 40 patients to antrum resection and truncal vagotomy. Proceeding from the action on motor function of the gastric stump and efferent intestinal loop the foods were distributed into three groups: with a stimulation, inhibitory of weak effects on the function.
