Sludge accumulation on the first stage of French design vertical flow constructed wetlands has been reported to improve treatment performance by favouring even sewage distribution on the beds' surface and increasing water retention time. However, due to its relatively low permeability, sludge layer can restrict the hydraulic capacity of the wetlands, requiring careful consideration of the feeding and resting strategy in order to avoid system ponding. This study aimed to elucidate the impact that sludge layer properties have on its permeability and investigate artificial modifications that could enhance it.

The luminescence of coordination polymers of Pr, Nd, and Lu with tetrafluoroterephthalate and camphorate, [Ln(Fbdc)(DMF)(HO)] (Ln = Pr, Nd, Lu) and [Ln(Camph)(NO)(MeOH)] (Ln = Pr, Nd, Lu), was studied. Ligand-centered and/or metal-centered emissions appear, which depend on the excitation wavelength, ultimately allowing the emitted light color to be adjusted. Low-efficiency ligand-to-metal energy transfer leads to a difference between the excitation spectra of the tetrafluoroterephthalate- and camphorate-Pr compounds, arising from a primary filtering effect on the ligand-centered excitation, by Pr absorption.

Terbium-doped AlO samples were obtained by gas-dispersed synthesis. It was shown that the resulting powders, with particle sizes of 10-70 nm, consist of a mixture of transition aluminas, among which the δ -polymorph is dominant. The luminescence properties of AlO:Tb have been studied upon excitation in the UV-visible range of the spectrum.

Screening of human fetal brain cDNA library by glioblastoma (GB) and normal human brain total cDNA probes revealed 80 differentially hybridized clones. Hybridization of the DNA from selected clones and the same cDNA probes confirmed this difference for 38 clones, of which eight clones contained Alu-repeat inserts with increased levels in GB. Thirty clones contained cDNAs corresponding to mitochondrial genes for ATP synthase subunit 6 (ATP6), cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COXII), cytochrome c oxidase subunit III (COXIII), NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1), NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4), and mitochondrial 12S rRNA.

Background And Objectives: Our objective was to identify differentially expressed genes involved in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

Methods: Screening of arrayed human fetal brain and human postnatal brain cDNA libraries was performed by differential hybridization with glioblastoma multiforme and human normal brain cDNAs.

Results: Repeated differential hybridization of more than 100 cDNA clones selected by primary screening and analysis of RNA from adult normal brain and glial tumors showed 16 nucleotide sequences differentially expressed between normal brain and brain tumors.
