The results of the study of influenza A virus surface antigens, hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, in the induction of nonspecific immunomodulation and protection from acute pulmonary staphylococcal infection have been studied. Protective effect, the cell composition of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid depend on the serological subtypes of surface antigens used for intranasal immunization and the infective dose of staphylococci.

The effect of pathogenic and noninfectious influenza viruses with different surface antigens on colony-forming stem cells of (CBA X C57BL/6)F1 mice was studied. Bone marrow cells were infected with A/PR8/34 (H1N1)/A/Krasnodar/101/59 (H2N2) viruses, a recombinant A/PK-6-3 (H2N1) strain thereof, A/Khabarovsk/933/77 (H1N1) strain; then they were inoculated intravenously to irradiated (820 rad) syngeneic recipients, and colony-forming units (CFU) were determined in the spleens 9 days after injection. Inoculation of bone marrow cells (2 X 10(5) per mouse) to the irradiated recipients immediately after mixing with a live A/Krasnodar virus heated at 56 degrees C, live A/PK-6-3, and A/Khabarovsk viruses resulted in suppression of formation of CFU and marked atrophy of the recipients' spleens.

Inoculation of CBA mice with pathogenic influenza A/PR8/34 (H1N1) virus and non-pathogenic A/Krasnodar/101/59 (H2N2) virus demonstrated that the pathogenic strain enhanced the synthesis of serum interferon and activated the function of normal killers, but had a relatively low capacity of causing in vitro proliferative response of spleen lymphocytes of intact and in vivo primed animals. In contrast, the nonpathogenic virus had less marked interferon-inducing capacity and that of activating normal killers, but induced a very high proliferative response of lymphocytes in culture.

The sensitivity of mice of CBA (H-2k haplotype), C57BL/6 (H-2b haplotype) strains and their hybrids M1 and F2 to the pathogenic influenza A/PR8/34 (H0N1) and nonpathogenic A/Krasnodar/101/59 (H2N2) virus strains was studied. The lethality, virus replication in the lungs, and the thymic index were determined. An increase in the resistance to the pathogenic influenza virus was found in male C57BL/6 and male F1 (CBA X C57BL/6) hybrids in the summer period as compared with winter.
