Comparison of total knee arthroplasty in stiff knees and knees with good preoperative range of motion.

This study compared the results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with stiff knees and patients with good preoperative range of motion. Results following TKA were compared in 30 patients (52 knees) with severely degenerated knees with preoperative range of motion < 50 degrees (group 1) and 30 patients (50 knees) who were matched for age, gender, and diagnosis with preoperative range of motion > 90 degrees (group 2). Results were evaluated for range of motion and Knee Society score, as well as the need for extensile approaches, soft-tissue releases, additional bone cuts, and constrained prostheses.

Large post-traumatic subarticular cystic lesion following avulsion injury of PCL mimicking tumour.

We describe a patient with a large subarticular cystic lesion in the proximal tibia developed following traumatic avulsion of PCL. There was a demonstrable communication between the cyst and the joint cavity and ingrowth of the synovial tissue was the most probable pathogenetic mechanism for the development of the cyst. We recommend that the post-traumatic cyst must be kept as a differential diagnosis in a patient presenting with cystic lesion around a joint, especially if there is a history of significant trauma in recent past.

Dissipative solitary waves in granular crystals.

We provide a quantitative characterization of dissipative effects in one-dimensional granular crystals. We use the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves as a diagnostic tool and develop optimization schemes that allow one to compute the relevant exponents and prefactors of the dissipative terms in the equations of motion. We thereby propose a quantitatively accurate extension of the Hertzian model that encompasses dissipative effects via a discrete Laplacian of the velocities.

[Acute myocardial infarction revealing a pheochromocytoma: a case report].

We report a case of a 38-year-old woman with pheochromocytoma admitted to our department for an acute myocardial infarction. The diagnosis of pheochromocytoma was evoked in view of the major pressure variations that appeared secondarily. Pheochromocytoma is mainly medullosurrenal tumour with clinical polymorphism; it can lead to severe cardiovascular disorders.

Effect of inhaled terbutaline on platelet activity in bronchial asthma.

Thirty five young subjects with long standing bronchial asthma were studied for the effects of terbutaline misthaler (500 micrograms) during acute asthma. Bronchodilators were omitted for a day before the test. Ten matched controls were also studied.

Immunoglobulins and allergy mediators in bronchial asthma.

Seventy four young asthmatics were evaluated to establish the role of immunoglobulins and allergy mediators in clinical asthma. They were categorized into Group I (n = 38) or Group II (n = 36) when having mild or severe bronchospasm respectively. In some patients, reversibility of bronchospasm (n = 35), exercise challenge (n = 24) and intradermal allergy testing (n = 24) were also studied.
