Introduction Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among preterm infants, necessitating effective treatment strategies. This study compared the efficacy of Beractant (SURVANTA®) to Poractant alfa (CUROSURF®) in treating RDS in preterm infants admitted to Tawam Hospital in the UAE. Methodology This retrospective study included preterm infants from 23+0 to 36+6 weeks of gestation with a diagnosis of RDS and treatment by Beractant or Poractant alfa within 48 hours of life between January 2020 and March 2023.

Is a pregnancy following a second trimester uterine evacuation associated with increased adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes?

Objective: To evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes of pregnancies following a uterine evacuation in the second trimester, in comparison to a first trimester spontaneous pregnancy loss.

Study Design: A retrospective analysis of data of women who conceived ≤6 months following a uterine evacuation due to a spontaneous pregnancy loss and subsequently delivered in a single tertiary medical center between 2016 and 2021. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared between women with second trimester (14-23 weeks) and first trimester (<14 weeks) pregnancy loss.

Randomized Trial of the Insulin-Only iLet Bionic Pancreas for the Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis- Related Diabetes.

Objective: Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) affects up to 50% of adults with cystic fibrosis and adds significant morbidity and treatment burden. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of automated insulin delivery with the iLet bionic pancreas (BP) in adults with CFRD in a single-center, open-label, random-order, crossover trial.

Research Design And Methods: Twenty participants with CFRD were assigned in random order to 14 days each on the BP or their usual care (UC).

To evaluate the psychosocial impact and user experience for the insulin-only configuration of iLet bionic pancreas (BP) in persons 6-83 years years of age with type 1 diabetes. In this multicenter, randomized controlled, 13-week trial, 275 adults (221 randomly assigned to the BP group and 54 to the standard of care [SC] group) and 165 youth and their caregivers (112 randomly assigned to the BP group and 53 to the SC group) completed psychosocial questionnaires at baseline, mid-study, and the end of the trial. In all age groups, most participants would recommend using the BP, including those with previous experience using automated insulin delivery devices.

There have been many inflammatory diseases linked to gut microbiome dysbiosis; such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. These same inflammatory diseases have been heavily linked to erectile dysfunction.

A Phytobezoar Causing Terminal Ileal Obstruction Following Revision Bariatric Surgery: A Case Report.

Bezoars are a rare complication causing small bowel obstruction. A phytobezoar causing terminal ileum obstruction following a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is extremely rare. A middle-aged woman with post-sleeve gastrectomy weight regain, converted to RYGB, presented 17 months after surgery with obstructive symptoms due to an impacted phytobezoar in the terminal ileum.

Climacturia and Penile Length Shortening: Adverse Outcomes following Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy.

While erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence are commonly cited side effects following radical prostatectomy (RP), climacturia and penile length shortening are less explored. The present study seeks to explore the incidence, risk factors, and predictors of recovery associated with climacturia and penile length shortening following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). From September 2018 to January 2020, 800 patients underwent RARP for primary treatment of localized prostate cancer.

Utility and Safety of Backup Insulin Regimens Generated by the Bionic Pancreas: A Randomized Study.

The bionic pancreas (BP) is initialized with body weight only and doses insulin autonomously without carbohydrate counting, instead using qualitative meal announcements. In case of device malfunction, the BP generates and continuously updates backup insulin doses for injection or pump users, including long-acting insulin dose, a four-period basal insulin profile, short-acting meal doses, and a glucose correction factor. Following a 13-week trial in type 1 diabetes, participants using the BP (6-83 years) completed 2-4 days, in which they were randomly assigned to their prestudy insulin regimen ( = 147) or to follow BP-provided guidance ( = 148).

Despite their worldwide prevalence and association with human disease, the molecular bases of human astrovirus (HAstV) infection and evolution remain poorly characterized. Here, we report the structure of the capsid protein spike of the divergent HAstV MLB clade (HAstV MLB). While the structure shares a similar folding topology with that of classical-clade HAstV spikes, it is otherwise strikingly different.

The Insulin-Only Bionic Pancreas Pivotal Trial Extension Study: A Multi-Center Single-Arm Evaluation of the Insulin-Only Configuration of the Bionic Pancreas in Adults and Youth with Type 1 Diabetes.

After a focused telehealth visit, patients can now access phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5 inhibitor) prescriptions through online direct-to-consumer (DTC) healthcare companies. This study seeks to quantify the cost of DTC PDE5 inhibitor treatment compared to a traditional physician visit and local pharmacy prescription. Two DTC companies, two compounding pharmacies with national reach, three online Canadian pharmacies, and sixteen American pharmacy chains were queried for prices of 90-day regimens of common PDE5 inhibitors.
