Article Synopsis
  • Traditional food systems are crucial for the well-being of rural Indigenous communities in remote areas, but the variety of wild foods is declining due to climate change.
  • A study involved 400 households from 18 Indigenous settlements in the Republic of Sakha, assessing their reliance on wild food and predicting future changes in food availability by the 2050s under various climate scenarios.
  • Results show that while current reliance on wild foods is generally low, there are significant regional differences; remote Arctic communities depend more on animal products, whereas southern settlements have reduced reliance due to better access to urban food sources.

A series of hybrids comprising two metal (Mn, Fe, and In) tetraphenylporphyrins axially substituted with anionic bidentate -thioindigo ligands (TI) were obtained. Substitution of the axial chloride anion by an oxygen atom of the dye forms short M-O bonds. Crystalline binuclear assemblies (TI)·{[MnTPP]·[MnTPP]}·CHCl ( = 2 for or 1 for ) and (TI){[MTPP]}·CHCl (M = Fe and = 2 for , M = In and = 1 for ) were synthesized.

Selective synthesis of polycarbonyl conjugates of (+)-fenchone and (+)-camphor was carried out (44-91 % yields) via the ring-opening transformation of 5-acyl-4-pyrones with hydrazones of the corresponding monoterpenoids. A strong influence of the hydrazone fragment on the observed tautomeric equilibrium of the tricarbonyl system was shown. Although the major tautomer of the conjugates is the acyclic polycarbonyl form, the camphor-based conjugates undergo new type of ring-chain tautomerism, diketoenaminone-dihydropyridone equilibrium, and predominantly exist in the cyclic dihydropyridone form in DMSO-d.

A large series of 2-arylchromen-4-ones containing from 1 to 3 fluorine atoms or a trifluoromethyl group in the structure was synthesized by condensation of fluorinated 2-hydroxyacetophenones with benzaldehydes in an alkaline medium and subsequent oxidative cyclization of the resulting 2'-hydroxychalcones by action of I in DMSO. The cytotoxicity of the obtained compounds was studied in glioblastoma cell line, SNB19, and in a monkey-derived normal kidney epithelium cell line, Vero. In addition, antiglycation activity of the obtained compounds was evaluated.

Proton therapy has emerged as an advantageous modality for tumor radiotherapy due to its favorable physical and biological properties. However, this therapy generates induced radioactivity through nuclear reactions between the primary beam, secondary particles, and surrounding materials. This study focuses on systematically investigating the induced radioactivity in the gantry room during pencil beam scanning, utilizing both experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulations.

The reaction between an excess of Fe(CO) with {Cryptand(K)}(C) produced the salt {Cryptand(K)}{[Fe(CO)]-μ-η:η-η:η-(C)}·4CHCl () containing negatively charged iron-bridged fullerene dimers. In these dimers, the C cages are linked via two Fe(CO) fragments, forming short Fe-C(C) bonds with a length of 2.070(3) Å and via two intercage C-C bonds with a length of 1.

Heterobimetallic {[Co(CO)][In(Pc)]} (1) and (Cp*Cr){[Mn(CO)][In(Pc˙)]}·2CHCl (2) complexes based on indium(III) phthalocyanine (Pc) were obtained as crystals. The complexes were synthesized by single (1) and double (2) reduction of indium(III) phthalocyanine chloride in the presence of transition metal carbonyls. Complex 1 contains dianionic Pc macrocycles.

The "passive" sorption detectors based on the activated charcoal together with scintillation spectrometry were utilized to measure radon flux density from the soil surface as well as volumetric activity of indoor radon at the dwellings of rural areas of Uzbekistan. Additionally, gamma dose rates as well as concentrations of natural radionuclides in soil and building materials samples were determined. Based on the values of natural radionuclides, common radiological indices have been calculated.

Natural radioactivity is a public health issue that affects people all around the world. Environmental radioactivity accounts for approximately 87% of the radiation dose received by human beings. The primary external source of irradiation to the human body is gamma radiation emitted by naturally occurring radioisotopes such as K and radionuclides from the Th and U families, as well as their decay products, which exist at trace amounts in all ground formations.

Coordination of tin(II) phthalocyanine to transition metal carbonyl clusters in neutral {Sn(Pc)} or radical anion {Sn(Pc˙)} states is reported. Direct interaction of Co(CO) with {Sn(Pc)} yields a crystalline complex {Co(CO)·Sn(Pc)} (1). There is no charge transfer from the cluster to phthalocyanine in 1, which preserves the diamagnetic Pc macrocycle.

River ecosystems are under increasing stress in the background of global change and ever-growing anthropogenic impacts in Central Asia. However, available water quality data in this region are insufficient for a reliable assessment of the current status, which come as no surprise that the limited knowledge of regulating processes for further prediction of solute variations hinders the development of sustainable management strategies. Here, we analyzed a dataset of various water quality variables from two sampling campaigns in 2019 in the catchments of two major rivers in Central Asia-the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers.

Article Synopsis
  • The Aydar-Arnasay Lake System (AALS) in Uzbekistan significantly affects the regional ecosystem and economy, particularly fisheries and ecotourism.
  • Recent studies utilizing geo-information systems (GIS) have not fully explored the changes in the lake's water levels, surface area, and volume from 1993 to 2017, prompting this research.
  • Findings showed a steep increase in water levels and surface area until 2006, driven primarily by outflow from a neighboring reservoir rather than precipitation, highlighting the need for further analysis of AALS's hydrological dynamics affected by climate factors.
