Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to help emergency department (ED) staff quickly distinguish between COVID-19 and seasonal influenza in patients by examining key differences in their presentations.
  • It analyzed data from adult patients diagnosed with either illness, focusing on demographic, laboratory, and chest radiography results.
  • Findings indicated that older age, low eosinophil levels, and chest X-ray signs of viral pneumonitis were strongly correlated with COVID-19, suggesting these factors can aid clinicians in making early diagnoses.

Phalangeal microgeodic syndrome (PMS) is a rare rheumatological disease affecting children strongly associated with cold weather. It is considered to be benign and self-limiting, with most cases resolving in warmer months, and no studies have investigated its association to autoantibodies or viral infection. In this peculiar case, a 12-year-old child with the previous COVID-19 infection developed PMS that did not improve in the warm weather and, subsequently, Raynaud's phenomenon and facial rash.

It is well established that access to preventative care, such as breast or cervical cancer screening, can reduce morbidity and mortality. Certain groups may be missed out of these healthcare services, such as women with disabilities, as they face many access barriers due to underlying inequalities and negative attitudes. However, the data have not been reviewed on whether women with disabilities face inequalities in the uptake of these services.

Background: China has low seasonal influenza vaccination rates among priority populations. In this study, we aimed to evaluate a pay-it-forward strategy to increase influenza vaccine uptake in rural, suburban, and urban settings in China.

Methods: We performed a quasi-experimental pragmatic trial to examine the effectiveness of a pay-it-forward intervention (a free influenza vaccine and an opportunity to donate financially to support vaccination of other individuals) to increase influenza vaccine uptake compared with standard-of-care user-paid vaccination among children (aged between 6 months and 8 years) and older people (≥60 years) in China.
