In this study using a discordant, xenogeneic, transplant model we demonstrate the functionality and safety of the first stent-based bioartificial pancreas (BAP) device implanted endovascularly into an artery, harnessing the high oxygen content in blood to support islet viability. The device is a self-expanding nitinol stent that is coated with a bilayer of polytetrafluoroethylene that forms channels to hold islets embedded in a hydrogel. We completed a 1-month study in the nondiabetic swine model (N = 3) to test the safety of the device and to assess islet functionality after device recovery.

While Electroencephalography (EEG)-based driver fatigue state classification models have demonstrated effectiveness, their real-world application remains uncertain. The substantial variability in EEG signals among individuals poses a challenge in developing a universal model, often necessitating retraining with the introduction of new subjects. This study examined the brain source space functional connectivity from the electroencephalogram (EEG) activity of 48 participants during a driving simulation experiment where they drove until fatigue developed. Source-space functional connectivity (FC) analysis is a state-of-the-art method for understanding connections between brain regions that may indicate psychological differences. Multi-band FC in the brain source space was constructed using the phased lag index (PLI) method and used as features to train an SVM classification model to classify driver fatigue and alert conditions.

In the present study, we investigated the pharmacokinetics of oral ingested tauropine which is a natural taurine derivative found in marine invertebrates, such as abalone, and in mouse. To measure tauropine in the blood, it was derivatized with phenyl isothiocyanate (PITC), and PITC-tauropine was separated by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and detected by ultraviolet absorbance. Tauropine was detectable in the blood obtained from mice intraperitoneally injected with tauropine.

6-Mercaptopurine (6-MP) is used extensively in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and inflammatory bowel diseases. Our laboratory determined previously, using a recombinant HEK293 cell model, that the -encoded equilibrative nucleobase transporter 1 (ENBT1) transports 6-MP into cells and significantly impacts the cytotoxicity of 6-MP in that model. To further investigate the clinical relevance of this finding, we now extend this work to an analysis of the impact of /ENBT1 expression and function on 6-MP uptake and cytotoxicity in leukemic lymphoblasts, the therapeutic target of 6-MP in ALL.

Investigation into oven baked sweet potato and carrot fries at various temperatures and times demonstrated the in situ formation of acrylamide in an exponential manner. High levels of acrylamide were found in these food items: up to 327 µg/kg for sweet potato baked at 190 °C for 14 min, and 99 µg/kg for carrot baked at 190 °C for 13 min. Risk assessment via Margin of Exposures estimation showed that consumption of these fries might pose adverse health effects to consumers from toddlers to adults, especially when the fries were prepared at high temperatures above 175 °C and for a long time.

Recently, we introduced a novel measure of "average life span shortened" (ALSS) to improve comparability of premature mortality over time. In this study, we applied this novel measure to examine trends in premature mortality caused by hematological cancers in Canada from 1980 to 2015. Mortality data for Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and leukemia were obtained from the World Health Organization mortality database.

Systemic inflammatory response and hemodilution are prominent factors associated with cardiopulmonary bypass and result in increased morbidity and mortality in children. Miniaturized systems have evolved to decrease such effects and restrict use of blood products, especially in the neonatal population. We have developed a table mounted cardiopulmonary bypass system that allows closer proximity of the system to the patient with consequent decrease in priming volumes, hemodilution, and its associated effects, and contributes to development into an ideally bloodless surgical approach.

Although the median sternotomy has been the traditional approach for congenital heart surgery, young patients and their families often find the midline scar to be cosmetically unappealing. At our center, a right transverse axillary incision has become the standard approach for many congenital cardiac lesions because of its safety, versatility, and unsurpassed aesthetic result.
