Plant height is among the most important agronomic traits influencing crop yield. Wheat lines carrying Rht genes are important in plant breeding due to their both higher yield capacity and better tolerance to certain environmental stresses. However, the effects of dwarf-inducing genes on stress acclimation mechanisms are still poorly understood.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a chronic vascular degenerative disease featured by progressive dilation and remodeling of the vascular wall, which may lead to aortic rupture and high mortality. The occurrence and development of AAA involve multiple mechanisms, including extracellular matrix degradation, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells and innate immunity. Extracellular matrix degradation is considered as the most important mechanism causing AAA.

Previous studies evaluating fracture liaison service (FLS) programs have found them to be cost-effective, efficient, and reduce the risk of fracture. However, few studies have evaluated the clinical effectiveness of these programs. We compared the patient populations of those referred for osteoporosis management by FLS to those referred by primary care physicians (PCP), within the Canadian healthcare system in the province of Ontario.

Tuberculosis (TB) ranks among the diseases with the highest morbidity rate with significantly high prevalence in developing countries. Globally, tuberculosis poses the most substantial burden of mortality. Further, a partially treated tuberculosis patient is worse than untreated; they may lead to standing out as a critical obstacle to global tuberculosis control.

Vaccines are considered to be one of the most cost-effective life-saving interventions in human history. The body's inflammatory response to vaccines has both desired effects (immune response), undesired effects [(acute phase reactions (APRs)] and trade-offs. Trade-offs are more potent immune responses which may be potentially difficult to separate from potent acute phase reactions.

Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) may cause impairments of the motor, sensory, and autonomic nervous systems, which result in adverse changes in body composition and cardiovascular health. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling may provide an effective alternative approach to perform exercise and improve cardiovascular health after SCI. Persons with an injury at or above T6 level are at high risk of developing a life-threatening complication of autonomic dysreflexia (AD).

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) provide clinical benefits over chemotherapy for lung cancer patients with EGFR activating mutations. Despite initial clinical responses, long-term efficacy is not possible because of acquired resistance to these therapies. We have developed EGFR TKI drug-tolerant (DT) human lung cancer cell lines as a model for de novo resistance.

Cold-acclimation is essential for the development of adequate frost-hardiness in cereals and therefore sudden freezes can cause considerable damage to the canopy. However, timely adding of an appropriate signal in the absence of cold acclimation may also harden wheat for the upcoming freeze. The feasibility of the promising signal molecule methylglyoxal was tested here for such applications and the signal mechanism was studied in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.

Many environmental stresses cause osmotic stress which induces several metabolic changes in plants. These changes often vary depending on the genotype, type and intensity of stress or the environmental conditions. In the current experiments, metabolic responses of wheat to osmotic stress induced by different kinds of osmolytes were studied under iso-osmotic stress conditions.

Normal pregnancy involves extensive remodeling of uterine and spiral arteries and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)-mediated proteolysis of extracellular matrix (ECM). Preeclampsia is characterized by hypertension in pregnancy (HTN-Preg) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with unclear mechanisms. Initial faulty placentation and reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) could release cytoactive factors and trigger an incessant cycle of suppressed trophoblast invasion of spiral arteries, further RUPP, and progressive placental ischemia leading to HTN-Preg and IUGR; however, the extent and depth of uterine vascularization and the proteolytic enzymes and ECM proteins involved are unclear.

The failure of lung cancer treatments has been attributed mostly to the development of drug resistance, however the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Cancer initiating stem cells (CSCs), present in tumors in a small percentage, play critical roles in the development of drug resistance, metastasis, and cancer relapse. Hence, novel treatments targeting both bulk cancer cells and CSCs are under intense investigation.

High pressure in the lower-limb veins is often associated with chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins (VVs), making it important to search for the mechanisms and agents that control venous function. We have shown that protracted increases in venous stretch/wall tension reduce vein contraction and augment matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9. Also, MMP-2 and MMP-9 promote venodilation, a hallmark of VVs.

Neuropeptide S (NPS) is a neuropeptide involved in the regulation of fear. Because safety learning is impaired in patients suffering from anxiety-related psychiatric disorders, and polymorphisms of the human neuropeptide S receptor (NPSR) gene have also been associated with anxiety disorders, we wanted to investigate whether NPSR-deficiency interferes with safety learning, and how prior stress would affect this type of learning. We first investigated the effect of pre-exposure to two different types of stressors (electric stimuli or immobilization) on safety learning in female and male C57Bl/6 mice, and found that while stress induced by electric stimuli enhanced safety learning in males, there were no differences in safety learning following immobilization stress.
