is a commensal yeast of the gastrointestinal tract and skin of humans. However, it causes opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, and is the second most common pathogen causing bloodstream infections. Although there are many studies on the epidemiology of infections, the fine- and large-scale geographical nature of remain incompletely understood.

The emergence of carbapenem-resistant, hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is a new threat to health care. We studied the molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in Qatar using whole-genome sequence data. We also characterized the prevalence and genetic basis of hypervirulent phenotypes and established the virulence potential using a Galleria mellonella model.

Background: There are limited data on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes at a national level, and none after 60 days of follow up. The aim of this study was to describe national, 60-day all-cause mortality associated with COVID-19, and to identify risk factors associated with admission to an intensive care unit (ICU).

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study including the first consecutive 5000 patients with COVID-19 in Qatar who completed 60 days of follow up by June 17, 2020.

Background: Palatally displaced canines or PDCs are upper permanent canines, commonly known as 'eye' teeth, that are displaced in the roof of the mouth. This can leave unsightly gaps, cause damage to the surrounding roots (which can be so severe that neighbouring teeth are lost or have to be removed) and, occasionally, result in the development of cysts. PDCs are a frequent dental anomaly, present in 2% to 3% of young people.

Hand Hygiene is the cheapest and simplest way to prevent the spread of infection, however international compliance is below than 40% (WHO, 2009). In the experience of Al Wakra Hospital, the improvement in hand hygiene compliance highlighted not just interventions towards training and education but also behavioral motivation and physical allocations of hand hygiene appliances and equipment. Through motivating the behavioral, emotional, physical and intellectual dimensions of the different healthcare worker professions, hand hygiene compliance has increased from 60.

Although the use of recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) to control intractable bleeding in nonhemophiliac patients is expanding, several issues pertinent to its potential thrombotic complications and effect on patient mortality are still of concern. We herein describe our experience at a developing country tertiary care center over a period of 4 years. A total of 49 patients were identified of whom 28.

High-output cardiac failure secondary to a surgically constructed arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare entity that is usually under-diagnosed in the dialysis population. We herein present a case of a 35-year-old female who was diagnosed with high-output cardiac failure secondary to an AVF and later managed with surgical division of the fistula. Risk factors associated with this entity are discussed, and preventive screening strategies are recommended.

Cephalic vein aneurysms are rare malformations that may develop in any part of the vascular system, and their history, presentation, and management vary depending on their site. The etiology of venous aneurysms remains unclear, although several theories have been elaborated. Venous aneurysms are unusual vascular malformations that occur equally between the sexes and are seen at any age; they can present as either a painful or a painless subcutaneous mass.

Background: New recommendations concerning the use of prophylactic anticoagulation for medically ill patients have been in use for some time now. This study aims at assessing how much house-staff in a tertiary care setting are implementing these new recommendations in the hope that through quantitative analysis of the deficiency we would be able to identify areas of weakness.

Methods: About 250 patients were randomly selected from all patients admitted to the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) during the year 2005 and stayed more than 48 h.

Background/objectives: Cancer is a very important risk factor for the development of thromboembolic disorders. We conducted a retrospective study, in order to examine the rate of Deep vein thrombosis occurrence in cancer patients, as well as the effects of risk factors for DVT in cancer patients affected with DVT.

Methods: 148 patients were enrolled in this study.

We describe the case of a young Lebanese woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a positive lupus anticoagulant (LAC) who developed right internal jugular vein and sigmoid sinus thrombosis. Coagulation studies showed that in addition to the LAC the patient was heterozygous for the factor V (FV) Leiden mutation, and C677T mutation of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene. The high prevalence of FV Leiden in the eastern Mediterranean region suggests that we should probably screen our SLE patients in this area, especially those with anticardiolipin antibodies and/or LAC who have no history of thrombosis, for this and other thrombophilia markers.
