Induction motors (IMs) are widely used in industrial applications due to their advantages over other motor types. However, the efficiency and lifespan of IMs can be significantly impacted by operating conditions, especially Unbalanced Supply Voltages (USV), which are common in industrial plants. Detecting and accurately assessing the severity of USV in real-time is crucial to prevent major breakdowns and enhance reliability and safety in industrial facilities.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiphase machines are emerging as alternatives to traditional three-phase machines, raising the need for effective rotor speed estimation for better control.
  • Traditional electromechanical sensors for speed detection are accurate but fragile and costly, prompting the need for new estimation algorithms.
  • This paper presents a novel strategy for estimating rotor speed in six-phase induction motors using the Short Time Fourier Transform method to track rotor slot harmonics, proving effective in experimental tests.
