Hospital surfaces are often contaminated with multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria that cause healthcare-associated infections and lead to increased mortality and morbidity. There is a need for new alternative antibacterial agents to overcome antibiotic resistance. Azadirachta indica and Simmondsia chinensis have been found to possess antibacterial activity and medicinal value.

Purpose: Prior literature has suggested a reduced performance of large language models (LLMs) in non-English analyses, including Arabic and French. However, there are no current studies testing the multimodal performance of ChatGPT in French ophthalmology cases, and comparing this to the results observed in the English literature. We compared the performance of ChatGPT-4 in French and English on open-ended prompts using multimodal input data from retinal cases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores environmentally friendly methods for synthesizing copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using plant extracts from Azadirachta indica and Simmondsia chinensis.
  • CuO NPs were confirmed through color change and UV-visible spectroscopy, showing antibacterial properties against various clinical bacteria, including MRSA, with effective concentrations ranging from 62.5 to 125 µg/ml.
  • The findings suggest CuO NPs as potential alternative antibiotics and support their application in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors globally.

Background/aims: This study assesses the proficiency of Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)-4 in answering questions about complex clinical ophthalmology cases.

Methods: We tested GPT-4 on 422 Ophthalmology Clinical Challenges, and prompted the model to determine the diagnosis (open-ended question) and identify the next-step (multiple-choice question). We generated responses using two zero-shot prompting strategies, including zero-shot plan-and-solve+ (PS+), to improve the reasoning of the model.

Background: Access to pacemakers and defibrillators is problematic in places with limited resources. Resterilization and reuse of implantable cardiac devices obtained post mortem from patients in wealthier nations have been undertaken, but uncertainty around the risk of infection is a concern.

Methods: A multinational program was initiated in 1983 to provide tested and resterilized pacemakers and defibrillators to underserved nations; a prospective registry was established in 2003.
