The content of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), insulin and cortisol was studied in the blood of children with growth retardation A 60%-increase in T3 concentrations was detected whereas T4 levels remained unchanged. Insulin concentration in the blood reduced by 62%, this being an early indicator of changes in anabolic processes. Cortisol levels decreased by 25% as well.

Estradiol benzoate injection to intact and ovariectomized rats during four days was accompanied by a marked increase in 3H-thymidine incorporation rate in DNA of incubated adenohypophyses. 17 beta-estradiol addition to the culture medium selectively augmented the lactotropic cell percentage in the primary monolayer culture, undergoing DNA synthesis stage. Possible pathways of mediated and direct estrogen effects on DNA synthesis by adenohypophyseal cells are discussed.

Complex interactions between estradiol and some other regulators of the hypophyseal lactotropic function were revealed. It was established that changes in prolactin synthesis and secretion in ovariectomized rats persisted for 3--4 days of adenohypophyseal cell cultivation in vitro.
