Introducing pulsatility in LVADs is known to reduce complications such as stagnation and thrombosis, but it is an ongoing topic of research on what the optimal form is. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been infecting humans for millennia and remains a global health problem, but its past diversity and dispersal routes are largely unknown. We generated HBV genomic data from 137 Eurasians and Native Americans dated between ~10,500 and ~400 years ago. We date the most recent common ancestor of all HBV lineages to between ~20,000 and 12,000 years ago, with the virus present in European and South American hunter-gatherers during the early Holocene.

Born out of a tradition of single-locus PCR-based approaches that often target individual species, stringent criteria for both data acquisition and analysis were introduced early to establish high standards of data quality. Today, the immense volume of data made available through next-generation sequencing has significantly increased the analytical resolution offered by processing ancient tissues and permits parallel analyses of host and microbial communities.

Interferon lambda 4 gene (IFNL4) encodes IFN-λ4, a new member of the IFN-λ family with antiviral activity. In humans IFNL4 open reading frame is truncated by a polymorphic frame-shift insertion that eliminates IFN-λ4 and turns IFNL4 into a polymorphic pseudogene. Criminal laws prohibiting female circumcision/female genital mutilation (FC/FGM) have recently been passed in the US Congress and in several state legislatures. The full effect of criminalization on prevention and on the overall well-being of immigrant groups from FC/FGM-practicing countries is currently unknown and will ultimately depend on, among other things, the precise interpretation of the laws by courts and local authorities. Meanwhile, the content of these laws prompt questions about their intended and inadvertent effects on FC/FGM, including: What acts are criminalized under these laws? Will criminalization prevent them? Do the laws have the potential to do more harm than good? The appropriateness of prosecuting FC/ FGM under existing child protection statutes is also raised.

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that increasing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in the large bowel increases gut epithelial proliferation rate (EPR). Two experiments were carried out in which rats were fed on bread (wholemeal or white)-based diets containing graded amounts of cooked haricot (Phaseolus vulgaris) beans; the latter are a rich source of fermentable carbohydrates. Consumption of beans was associated with several-fold increases in SCFA production with the greatest relative increase being for butyrate.

Two experiments were carried out to examine the short (1-3 d) and medium (14 d) term adaptations of rat large-bowel (LB) fermentation to alterations in substrate supply brought about by including cooked haricot beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in diets based on white bread. Changes in organic matter (OM) flow from the ileum occurred within 1 d and were stable for 14 d but the pattern of caecal short-chain fatty acids took much longer to stabilize with considerable increases in butyrate between 1 and 3 d and up to 14 d. This suggests that the metabolic activity of the LB microflora may take a considerable time to stabilize after an abrupt change in substrate supply.
