Article Synopsis
  • Congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle is a rare condition with an unclear cause, but orthopedic surgeons should recognize and effectively treat it.
  • A 15-year-old female softball player experienced shoulder pain with no prior injury and was diagnosed with this condition.
  • After conservative treatment failed, she underwent surgery involving open reduction and internal fixation using a bone graft for better outcomes.

Introduction: Atlas and axis fractures are the most severe cervical fractures which may result in complete paralysis or death. The purpose of the current study is to identify disparities regarding length of stay (LOS), mortality, and demographic factors in patients with the most serious cervical spine fractures utilizing a nationally representative database.

Materials And Methods: The Nationwide Emergency Department Sample was utilized to provide a representative sample for patients with a primary diagnosis of C1 or C2 fracture presenting to emergency departments in years from October 2015 to December 2019.

Background: Prior research has shown a positive association of pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG) in patients with non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), likely due to an increase in ultraviolet exposure associated with both. However, the role of NMSC as a genetic risk factor for PXG has not been examined. Thus, the goal of this study is to utilize Mendelian randomization with genome-wide association studies to evaluate for genetic causality while controlling for environmental confounders.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of missed compartment syndrome in tibia fractures treated with and without regional anesthesia.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of patients with operative tibial shaft or plateau fractures at a single level-one trauma hospital between January 2015 and April 2022 with a minimum of 3-month follow-up. Patients under 18 years of age, an ipsilateral knee dislocation, known neurologic injury at presentation, or prophylactic fasciotomy were excluded.

The utilization of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is increasing, driving associated annual health care costs higher. Opting for outpatient over inpatient TSA may provide a solution by reducing costs. However, there is no single set of accepted patient selection criteria for outpatient TSA.

Article Synopsis
  • * Among 75,385 patients analyzed, Black patients showed decreased odds of being admitted but were more likely to experience longer hospital stays compared to White patients, while older age groups (75+) had higher admission rates.
  • * The research indicates significant regional disparities in admission rates and lengths of stay, with Midwestern and Western hospitals having lower admission rates, while trauma centers were more likely to admit patients, highlighting the need to address these inequities in care.

Article Synopsis
  • As open access publishing gains traction in orthopaedics, it's crucial to understand the various publishing options and their impacts on citations and readership, particularly in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) literature.
  • The study analyzed 9,606 TKA articles from 2016 onwards to compare different types of articles: open journal, hybrid, closed license, and open repository, using metrics like citations, social media attention, and readership.
  • Results showed that open repository articles had the highest mean citations (14.40) and readership (44.68), while open journals lagged behind in both metrics, indicating that free-to-publish options are more beneficial than paid ones.

Background: Fibula shortening can compromise ankle stability and force transmission, thereby impacting clinical outcomes. Because radiographs depict 3-dimensional anatomy in 2 dimensions, accurate radiographic assessment of fibula length is a commonly encountered clinical challenge. The talocrural angle (TCA), Shenton line, and dime sign are useful parameters of fibula length.

Background: Preoperative anemia is common in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Several definitions of anemia have been described, with no clear consensus on the optimal one for preoperative screening. We hypothesized that depending on the definition used preoperatively, the proportion of anemic patients identified who would require a postoperative allogeneic blood transfusion would vary significantly.

Objective: Genomic profiling previously classified melanoma into distinct subtypes based on the presence or absence of mutations in driver genes, but metabolic differences between and within these groups have yet to be thoroughly analyzed. Thus, the objective of the present study is to provide the first effort to holistically characterize the metabolic landscape of qualified melanoma genomic subtypes at single-cell resolution.

Methods: Expression data for a total of 1145 malignant cells sourced from NRAS(Q61L), BRAF(V600E), and NRAS/BRAF WT melanomas were retrieved from the Broad Single Cell Portal.

Background: Social media platforms are often used for research dissemination and collaboration. Given the increased prevalence of online-only publications, understanding what drives research dissemination is important. Here, we analyzed factors associated with increased social media attention among peer-reviewed publications in total knee arthroplasty, total hip arthroplasty, and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.

Article Synopsis
  • Open access (OA) publications in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) literature are increasing, and this study compares their social media attention and citation rates against non-OA publications from 2016 to 2022.
  • OA articles showed significantly higher social media engagement (measured by Altmetric Attention Score) and Mendeley readership compared to non-OA articles, but there was no significant difference in citation counts between the two types.
  • The findings suggest that while OA articles attract more online attention, this does not necessarily translate to more citations, particularly within leading arthroplasty journals, prompting authors to consider the balance between readership and publication costs.

Melanoma continues to represent the most serious skin cancer worldwide. However, few attempts have been made to connect the body of research on advanced melanoma. In the present review, we report on strides made in the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial metastatic melanoma.

Anesthesia in neurosurgery embodies a vital element in the development of neurosurgical intervention. This undisputed interest has offered surgeons and anesthesiologists an array of anesthetic selections to utilize, though with this allowance comes the equally essential requirement of implementing a maximally appropriate agent. To date, there remains a lack of consensus and official guidance on optimizing anesthetic choice based on operating priorities including hemodynamic parameters (e.

  • The case reports the second known instance of bursitis with rice bodies following a rotator cuff repair using a bovine-derived collagen scaffold.
  • After treatment that involved removing the rice bodies and an unincorporated portion of the implant, the patient successfully recovered and returned to normal activities.
  • It emphasizes the importance of considering early MRI evaluations for patients experiencing prolonged pain or swelling after such surgical repairs, creating guidance for future medical assessments.

Introduction: Cutaneous melanoma remains a leading cancer with sobering post-metastasis mortality rates. To date, the ligand-receptor interactome of melanomas remains weakly studied despite applicability to anti-cancer drug discovery. Here we leverage established crosstalk methodologies to characterize important ligand-receptor pairs in primary and metastatic cutaneous melanoma.

Article Synopsis
  • * The development of CP is linked to two main theories: the embryonic theory, which involves remnants from early brain development, and the metaplastic theory, related to cell changes in the pituitary gland.
  • * Treatment options for CP include surgery, intracystic therapy, and radiation, but there is ongoing debate about the most effective approach and timing for intervention, highlighting the need for further research and innovation in management strategies.

Synucleinopathies represent a diverse set of pathologies with significant morbidity and mortality. In this review, we highlight the surgical management of three synucleinopathies: Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). After examining underlying molecular mechanisms and the medical management of these diseases, we explore the role of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the treatment of synuclein pathophysiology.
