Osteoporosis can determine surgical strategy for total hip arthroplasty (THA), and perioperative fracture risk. The aims of this study were to use hip CT to measure femoral bone mineral density (BMD) using CT X-ray absorptiometry (CTXA), determine if systematic evaluation of preoperative femoral BMD with CTXA would improve identification of osteopenia and osteoporosis compared with available preoperative dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) analysis, and determine if improved recognition of low BMD would affect the use of cemented stem fixation. Retrospective chart review of a single-surgeon database identified 78 patients with CTXA performed prior to robotic-assisted THA (raTHA) (Group 1).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the mortality rates of geriatric patients with hip fractures who were treated nonoperatively versus those who underwent surgical treatment.
  • Conducted at an academic trauma center, the research involved patients over 65 years old and analyzed data from a decade, focusing on femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures while controlling for patient health factors.
  • Results showed that nonoperative patients had a significantly higher 1-year mortality rate (46.1%) compared to those who had surgery (18.0%), indicating that surgical intervention may lead to better outcomes for this patient population.

Introduction: More than 90% of orthopaedic surgery graduates pursue fellowship training after residency. Previous investigations have examined factors considered important by orthopaedic sports medicine and hand surgery fellowship program directors (PDs). This study sought to identify which factors orthopaedic trauma fellowship PDs deem most important when evaluating applicants.

Study Design: Retrospective review.

Objective: To investigate associations of obesity with outcomes and costs of adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery.

Summary Of Background Data: Increasing body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for complications after nondeformity spine surgery, but its effect on ASD surgery is unknown.
