Psychosocial predictors of body image dissatisfaction in patients referred for NHS aesthetic surgery.

Background: A limited number of studies have researched psychosocial predictors of body image dissatisfaction exclusively within the National Health Service (NHS) aesthetic surgery patient populations, despite aesthetic surgery being offered on an exceptional basis. The Adult Exceptional Aesthetic Referral Protocol (AEARP) defines criteria for aesthetic surgery under the NHS in Scotland. The protocol requires psychological assessment prior to surgery for the majority of aesthetic surgery procedures offered.

Fear of recurrence: results of a randomized trial of relapse detection in schizophrenia.

Objective: We aimed to develop and establish the reliability and validity of a measure of Fear of Recurrence, measuring cognitive appraisals of relapse rather than standard early signs of relapse. We also aimed to establish the sensitivity and specificity to relapse.

Method: Participants diagnosed with schizophrenia or a related disorder were randomized to one of two early signs monitoring conditions, using either the Early Signs Scale or the Fear of Recurrence Scale (FoRSe).

Maternal feeding behaviour and young children's dietary quality: a cross-sectional study of socially disadvantaged mothers of two-year old children using the Theory of Planned Behaviour.

Background: Having breakfast, eating food 'cooked from scratch' and eating together as a family have health and psychosocial benefits for young children. This study investigates how these parentally determined behaviours relate to children's dietary quality and uses a psychological model, the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), to investigate socio-cognitive predictors of these behaviours in socially disadvantaged mothers of young children in Scotland.

Method: Three hundred mothers of children aged 2 years (from 372 invited to participate, 81% response rate), recruited via General Practitioners, took part in home-based semi-structured interviews in a cross-sectional survey of maternal psychological factors related to their children's dietary quality.

Initiation and continuation of breastfeeding: theory of planned behaviour.

Aims: This paper reports a study investigating new mothers' subjective norms in relation to both breast- and bottle-feeding. The influence of norms on women's infant feeding decisions and the relative influence of social referents at varying degrees of social distance were assessed.

Background: Increasing breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates is a key challenge for health educators.

The relationship between trait vulnerability and anxiety and depressive diagnoses at long-term follow-up of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

The current study examined the relationship between measures of trait vulnerability and long-term outcome in 83 patients diagnosed and treated for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) 8-14 years previously. Diagnostic status was assessed by structured interview, and trait affect, trait anxiety and trait depression were measured by the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T) and the Personal Style Inventory (PSI), respectively. Trait measures were all highly inter-correlated, and patients with diagnoses of GAD, social phobia and depressive disorders at long-term follow-up recorded very poor scores on all three scales.

Practice of and attitudes toward breast self-examination (BSE): a cross-cultural comparison between younger women in Scotland and Greece.

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a method of early detection of breast cancer. Although BSE is recommended for all women, it is mostly suitable and readily available for younger women. BSE beliefs and practices of women in Scotland, a country with organised health campaigns about BSE, were compared with those of women in Greece, a country without such campaigns.
