Corrosion is a major obstacle to a safe implementation of geotechnical applications. Using a novel approach that includes vertical scanning interferometry (VSI) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) we discuss time-dependent carbon steel corrosion and film formation at geothermally relevant temperatures (80-160 °C) in CO-saturated mildly acidic NaCl brine. Iron dissolution kinetics follows a logarithmic rate at 80 and 160 °C and a linear rate at 120 °C.

We describe a new experimental technique that allows for soft x-ray spectroscopy studies (∼100-1000 eV) of high pressure liquid (∼100 bars). We achieve this through a liquid cell with a 100 nm-thick SiN membrane window, which is sandwiched by two identical O-rings for vacuum sealing. The thin SiN membrane allows soft x-rays to penetrate, while separating the high-pressure liquid under investigation from the vacuum required for soft x-ray transmission and detection.

Elucidating dissolution kinetics and mechanisms at carbonate mineral-water interfaces is essential to many environmental and geochemical processes, including geologic CO(2) sequestration in deep aquifers. In the present work, effects of background electrolytes on dolomite (CaMg(CO(3))(2)) reactivity were investigated by measuring step dissolution rates using in situ hydrothermal atomic force microscopy (HAFM) at 90 °C.
