Factors influencing the quality of life in inflammatory bowel disease: A comprehensive review.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic relapsing disorders, including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), which affects an increasing number of people worldwide. In the last few decades, the scientific world has witnessed many developments in IBD management by controlling debilitating symptoms and remaining in remission for more protracted periods. Even so, we still have a large population suffering from active IBD.

Phytogeographical regions of Egypt: first open-source geospatial data and its applications.

Objectives: To our knowledge, this is the first attempt for digitizing the Egyptian phytogeographical regions through incorporation of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques including geo-referencing ground data of old-history paper maps. The main objective for the current study was digitizing and creating the first open-source geospatial data for the Egyptian phytogeographical regions and to make them readily available for usage by researchers - making this study novel.

Data Description: Geospatial data were created for the Egyptian phytogeographical regions based on ground data paper map showing the boundaries of each region in the country, Egypt.

Ameliorative effect of selenium nanoparticles on testicular toxicity induced by cisplatin in adult male rats.

Cisplatin (Cis) is a treatment for testicular germ-cell tumors (TGCTs). Unfortunately, it causes testicular toxicity due to releasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) causing damage to testicular cells and chromosomes. The current study aimed to investigate the ameliorative effect of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) against cisplatin testicular toxicity in male rats by assessment of body weight, testis weight, oxidative stress markers in testis homogenates as (malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione reduced (GSH), Glutathione peroxidase (GSH ∼ PX) and Catalase (CAT)), gene expression, testosterone concentration (T), sperm characteristics (count, motility and abnormality) and testicular histopathology.

In arid ecosystems, lack of vegetation and nutrients can negatively impact soil carbon (C) content. In the current study, our goals were to assess soil C stocks to a depth of 50 cm in an arid ecosystem (Wadi Al-Sharaea, Saudi Arabia) and determine their relation to different vegetation cover. To address our research objective, a total of 102 quadrate (randomly selected) were established along the desert wadi.

Objectives: Thioacetamide (TAA) was administered to induce an animal model of liver disease with secondary splenomegaly to assess the mechanisms underlying the effects of rapamycin and filgrastim when taken separately or in combination on the biochemical and histopathological aspects of the liver and spleen.

Materials And Methods: Thirty adult male albino rats were divided into five groups (control, TAA-treated group, TAA+rapamycin, TAA+filgrastim, and TAA+rapamycin+filgrastim group). We measured relative liver and spleen weights, serum levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and albumin.

Comparative Effectiveness of Closed Reduction With Percutaneous Pinning and Open Reduction With Internal Fixation in the Operative Management of Pediatric Type III Supracondylar Fractures.

Background Supracondylar fracture with total displacement is classified as Gartland type 3. Objectives Distal radius fractures are common pediatric orthopedic injuries accounting for 25% of all fractures with a significant incidence in the age group 10-14 years. This study aims to evaluate the operative and non-operative methods of treating distal radius fractures in children. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study conducted on 176 children with distal radius fracture.

The Use of Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-hCG) Levels as a Predictor of Successful Medical Management of Ectopic Pregnancy.

Objectives The early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is essential in determining the appropriate therapeutic approach. This study demonstrates the important factors considered in the prediction of a successful medical treatment, which will, in turn, improve the quality of patient counseling and guidance prior to the initiation of the treatment. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of 58 ectopic pregnancies that were treated medically with methotrexate in Bahrain Defense Force (BDF) Hospital from January 2016 to January 2021.

Evaluation of Rapid Immunochromatographic Tests for the Direct Detection of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases and Carbapenemases in Enterobacterales Isolated from Positive Blood Cultures.

NG-Test CTX-M MULTI and NG-Test Carba 5 (NG Biotech) are two rapid immunochromatographic assays that are widely used for the detection of the most common extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and carbapenemases in Enterobacterales. ESBL and carbapenemases are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and their rapid detection from positive blood cultures is crucial for early initiation of effective antimicrobial therapy in bloodstream infections (BSI) involving antibiotic-resistant organisms. In this study, we developed a rapid workflow for positive blood cultures for direct identification of Enterobacterales by MALDI-TOF mass-spectrometry, followed by detection of ESBL and carbapenemases using NG-Test CTX-M MULTI and NG-Test Carba 5 (NG Biotech).

COVID-19 versus SARS: A comparative review.

The two genetically similar severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2, have each been responsible for global epidemics of vastly different scales. Although both viruses arose from similar origins, they quickly diverged due to differences in their transmission dynamics and spectrum of clinical presentations. The potential involvement of multiple organs systems, including the respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal and neurological, during infection necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the clinical pathogenesis of each virus.

Sediment clays are trapping heavy metals in urban lakes: An indicator for severe industrial and agricultural influence on coastal wetlands at the Mediterranean coast of Egypt.

Coastal wetlands of the northern coast of Egypt have been impacted with higher loads of runoff, especially the large urbanized lakes of the Nile deltaic coast. Five urban lakes spanning the northern coast of Egypt (from east to west: Bardawil, Manzala, Burullus, Edku, and Mariut) were sampled for quantifying concentrations of heavy metals in their sediment and plant tissues. Sediment and plant tissues in lake Bardawil were the least contaminated, and the other lakes were moderately to highly polluted with Ni, Co, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Cu.
