Purpose: Prior literature has suggested a reduced performance of large language models (LLMs) in non-English analyses, including Arabic and French. However, there are no current studies testing the multimodal performance of ChatGPT in French ophthalmology cases, and comparing this to the results observed in the English literature. We compared the performance of ChatGPT-4 in French and English on open-ended prompts using multimodal input data from retinal cases.

Importance: Effective management of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) requires reliable patient follow-up to prevent disease progression.

Objective: To investigate the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with being lost to follow-up (LTFU) among individuals with PDR or DME treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) intravitreal injections (IVIs) or panretinal photocoagulation (PRP).

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study included a multicenter, retrospective review of patients with PDR or DME treated in Toronto, Canada, from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021.

Topic: To compare face masking protocols for post-intravitreal injection endophthalmitis (PIE) prophylaxis.

Clinical Relevance: Though mask mandates are lifted, ophthalmologists may question whether continued investment into face masks will influence their PIE rate.

Methods/literature Reviewed: We included comparative studies of PIE incidence by masking policy (i.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between social determinants of health (SDoH) and the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Methods: This analysis included adult respondents (>50 years old) from the 2017 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The primary outcomes were self-reported diagnosis of AMD and self-reported vision loss due to AMD.

Purpose: To report the technique and long-term outcomes of patients with giant retinal tear associated retinal detachment (GRT-RD) treated with pneumatic retinopexy (PnR).

Methods: Retrospective cohort study. All patients presenting with GRT-RD with tears in the superior ten-clock hours who underwent primary PnR were included in this study.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sociodemographic and healthcare access factors with self-reported diabetic retinopathy (DR) prevalence in a nationally representative sample of the United States.

Design: This is a population based, cross-sectional analysis.

Methods: Data from those who answered the question, "Have you ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had diabetic retinopathy?" from the 2017 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) was analyzed through logistic regression to examine the association between DR prevalence and social determinants of health (SDH).

Purpose: Sex bias remains a pervasive reality in academic medicine, often reflected in subtle linguistic choices, which can skew perceptions of competence and perpetuate workplace inequity. This study aims to investigate the relationship between host sex, speaker sex, and speaker introduction practices in ophthalmology grand rounds events.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Article Synopsis
  • Intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy is a key treatment for retinal diseases, but the effectiveness and safety of new bispecific agents like faricimab compared to traditional monoclonal anti-VEGF agents is still uncertain.
  • A systematic review of studies from 2015 to 2024 analyzed outcomes from 13 studies involving both faricimab and standard anti-VEGF therapy, focusing on visual acuity, central subfield thickness, and adverse events.
  • Results showed no significant difference in visual acuity between the two treatments, but faricimab reduced central subfield thickness more effectively in cases of diabetic macular edema and retinal vein occlusion, with similar rates of ocular side effects across both agent types.

Objective: To compare visual outcomes and complication risk based on the timing of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) following cataract surgery with retained lens fragments.

Methods: MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched between 2000 to February 2022 for studies comparing visual outcomes and complications based on time to PPV. Discrete outcomes were analyzed using a random-effects meta-analysis model on Review Manager (RevMan 5.

In this systematic review, the efficacy of scleral buckle (SB) with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was compared to PPV alone in eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) due to inferior retinal breaks (IRB). Measured outcomes included final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), anatomic success, and complication rates in randomized controlled trials and observational studies from 2000 to 2022. Among four studies (696 eyes), three studies demonstrated no significant difference between PPV and PPV/SB for final BCVA, whereas one study reported better BCVA with added SB.

Article Synopsis
  • This case report discusses a pre-term infant diagnosed with severe bilateral retinal disease, highlighting the challenges in managing aggressive retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
  • The infant underwent various assessments, including genetic testing that revealed a novel mutation in the LRP5 gene, which is linked to retinal issues.
  • The findings emphasize the need for careful evaluation of preterm infants with retinal problems, as genetic profiles can alter the understanding and treatment of these conditions, particularly distinguishing between ROP and familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR).
